While most acting books focus on a specific method and everything the actor "should" do, this does a bit of a flip and teaches a "non-method," while focusing on what the actor should NOT do; or rather, on breaking an actor's bad habits- which most tend to have. The writing is simple and straightforward, but the content is quite unique, yet the content isn't quite like what you'd expedt to find in a book on how to act- or how NOT to act, in this case. He also includes lessons that he has learned from the big-name actors he has taught over the years, to give the actor a broader scope from which to view their own experiences and approach to acting. It's not a very long book, and while it does go off on a tangent at times, a definitely a refreshing place from which to undertake a new approach to performing and auditioning if you've been feeling stuck in your career.

This book not only stresses using your intuition, but provides actual help to get you there. I am very grateful for not only the good advice, but the philosophy beneath the advice. I'm sorry the author is dead because I would love to write him a thank you note. Anyone people like Kevin Kline depend on is good enough for me!!!

I purchased this book to help me in my voice acting. I'm not a trained actor, so i thought it would help me. The basic premise is simple: don't memorize a script, but keep the spontaneity juices going even through a performance. The author gives many anecdotes of his personal life as an actor, and of the students he coaches. I wish there was an a video or recording of an actual coaching session so that I could see the techniques in action.Because of my lack of training in the field, many of his techniques and experiences are over my head. Using this for voice over work is limited, in my view, because most voiceover scripts cannot be read in a spontaneous way, in a different mood each time. It might be useful in an audition, perhaps in finding the proper read, or in discovering a unique approach to the copy. If you're a voice actor, maybe it will help you. Your mileage may vary.If you're an actor, this book will give you a leg up from audition to final performance. Many of the famous names he's coached can attest to his techniques for success. Whether you're a seasoned professional or just beginning you'll find a lot in this book that will help you.

When I opened this it was all dirty and had grease marks all over it. Pretty gross, not a germaphobe but the fact I have to read this and it looks like it has been through hell and back is pretty gross.

This book has changed my acting radically. For the better!! Harold's ideas have opened me up and freed all the should'ves and ought-to-dos! Very hard to express...

Maybe it’s just the right time for me to have picked this book up.I just came from a class where I killed it with four scenes using Guskin’s techniques.I recommend this book for any actor, beginner or experienced.

This is a terrific book, an entirely different approach to creating a character that makes acting immediately accessible. I read it with a pen in hand, underlining passages and starring sections that were especially important. (A LOT of this book is marked up!) Two years of acting classes had me feeling confused and discouraged. This book made me excited about acting again.

Great technique for trusting the text and yourself. It leaves you free to respond to the other characters and to continuous exploration of the characters and the play.

Review

"In my view it is the best book ever written about Hans Christian Andersen. If someone had asked me a couple of months ago which biography of Andersen was the best I would immodestly have said my own work, but today I would answer that the best book is the one written by Jackie Wullschlager. Not only is is a fuller and more comprehensive biography, but it is the first book ever to place Andersen in a contemporary European tradition and to measure him with a European yardstick." —Elias Bredsdorff, Emeritus Professor of Scandinavian Languages at Cambridge "[T]his spring, Knopf will publish a biography by Jackie Wullschlager, a writer for the London Financial Times, which may add to the few reliable studies available in English, the most notable of which is Elias Bredsdorff's . . ." —Diana and Jeffrey Frank, The New Yorker"Finely documented and insightful . . . Jackie Wullschlager's account . . . is a delight . . . her work gives off a classic sparkle. It will bring joy . . . "-George Steiner, Observer"Splendid . . . authoritative . . . gracefully written [and] meticulously referenced . . . will encourage many readers to revisit an author who undoubtedly deserves serious critical attention." -Christina Hardyment, Financial Times"Intensively researched and elegantly written."-Humphrey Carpenter, Sunday Times "Deals brilliantly with the whole man."-Melanie McDonagh, Daily Telegraph "Told with thoroughness and sympathy . . . [a life] as peculiar, fascinating and painful as any of his celebrated fairy tales."-Rosemary Ashton, Sunday Telegraph"An extraordinarily accomplished biography, both intellectually rigorous and emotionally wise . . . fascinating . . . Well-written and fascinating look at the real Hans Christian Andersen. His life would make a very interesting movie - it's almost a shame that the Danny Kaye movie that bears his name is so full of falsehoods and creative liberties. I think the real Hans Christian Andersen must have been a very strange creature to know and observe and understand. What a flawed and fascinating personality he had!

There are three Hans Christian Andersen biographies on the market: by Alison Prince (1998), Jackie Wullschlager (2000), and Jens Andersen (no relation -- 2004).The later is the weakest, because the author is hesitant to reveal too much about Andersen's personal life. Being Danish, he cannot ruffle too many feathers, since he still has to live with the descendants of these people! The other two are British...The Wullschlager biography takes a Freudian approach -- quite revealing as to Andersen's sex life, and ties in the major events of his life to his fairy tales and stories. It does an excellent job in both those areas. The storyteller's friend! However, the most revealing of the three is the Prince -- it takes over where the Wullschlager left off. Andersen's homosexuality is a given, with the "politics" of oppression and repression well expressed. But it also presents the main events of his life in a brand new light: Andersen may not have been Mr and Mrs Andersen's little boy! A royal bastard, probably the son of the Crown Prince who later became king of Denmark. This sheds a whole new light on the "hidden" meaning of such masterpieces of Andersen's as THE UGLY DUCKLING!So please avoid the Andersen, read the Wullschlager first, then compare with the Prince -- it will be a thrilling experience in biography reading, I promise you!

Interesting man. I had read an earlier biography in the 80s which put Andersen on a pure pedestal and was almost as much a fairy tale as his stories. This one is warts and all, which not only humanizes Andersen but makes him all that more fascinating. Probably the definitive biography.

No true artist is really ever content in the age in which they live. Artists naturally resist time, space and matter. Given that, living in Europe during the 1800s must have been tedious for a man of Hans Christian Andersen's (b. 1805, d. 1875), passion and vision. In Andersen's case, writing became his way of transcending matter, of becoming timeless and immortal.Author Jackie Wullschlager writes a thoroughly researched biography of the quirky genius. While I loved this book, I gave it three stars because I completely disagree with her premise that Andersen was a "victim" of classism and elitism and that his work was inspired in opposition to this.Andersen pushed gender, sexual, social and artistic boundaries so effortlessly that I have to believe it was instinctive not contrived. Isn't it every artist's lament that they are misunderstood? And isn't it every biographer's urge to explain it for them? All artists share the very same yearnings, complications, misunderstandings, restlessness and even nuttiness that Andersen did.Quite simply there is no answer as to what informs any of their work. It just is. Mortals like us have to accept their magic gracefully. I certainly wish Wullschlager had.

Very interesting book and a good read--having heard of Andersen most of my life, it was good to read about him. The book lays to rest the image of Andersen created by Danny Kaye in the (albiet interesting) misleading musical version of Hans Christian's life. The book chronicles the master storyteller's incredible ambition and drive to make something of himself, despite his poverty-stricten background, and thoroughly examines the demons (both physical and psychological) that encompassed his life.

I thought this was a well-researched, well-written biography with excellent insight into Anderson and the events that formed his character.

Great research

The reader comes away from this work with a vivid picture of the great Danish author. From his lowly birth, son of an illiterate washerwoman, his early love of music and theatre, his shyness yet profound self-belief which prompted him to leave home to make his fortune in Copenhagen aged only 14, Wullschlager conducts us through his life.Despite his fairy tales and enjoyment of the company of children, Andersen was far from being merely the naive and child-like personality which some attributed to him. Using his diaries and accounts of those who knew him, the author shows his often depressive and difficult character, and his constant craving for approbation - "We are suffering a good deal from Andersen" wrote Charles Dickens when the latter came for a lengthy stay.Andersen's work (not just fairy tales but novels, plays, travel works, poetry, and latterly tales aimed at a more adult audience) are shaped by events in his life, and in exerpts from his writings Wullschlager points out the parallels between them. With a number of b/w photos of Andersen and important places and people in his life, this leaves the reader with a feeling that s/he knows and somewhat understands the writer. Most enjoyable and interesting.

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Significant Seven, November 2007: Adrian Tomine draws his mid-twenties slackers with an impeccable, exact line for every slumpy gesture and cultivated rumple. In Shortcomings, this ex-wunderkind tackles a book-length comic for the first time after three collections of stories, and his maturity shows not so much in the ages of his characters, who are still slackly wandering, dropping out of grad school or managing a movie theater, but in his calm and masterful handling of his story, in which vividly individual characters wander through the maze of imposed and self-generated stereotypes of Asian and American identities (the title is a wry allusion to one of the most enduring of those assumptions). Never has that old commonplace that the personal is the political seemed more paralyzing, and more true. --Tom Nissley

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. SignatureReviewed by Junot DíazTomine's lacerating falling-out-of-love story is an irresistible gem of a graphic novel. Shortcomingsis set primarily in an almost otherworldly San Francisco Bay Area; its antihero, Ben Tanaka, is not your average comic book protagonist: he's crabby, negative, self-absorbed, über-critical, slack-a-riffic and for someone who is strenuously race-blind, has a pernicious hankering for whitegirls. His girlfriend Miko (alas and tragically) is an Asian-American community activist of the moderate variety. Ben is the sort of cat who walks into a Korean wedding and says, Man, look at all these Asians, while Miko programs Asian-American independent films and both are equally skilled in the underhanded art of fighting without fighting. As you might imagine, their relationship is in full decay. In Tomine's apt hands, Tanaka's heartbreaking descent into awareness is reading as good as you'll find anywhere. What a relief to find such unprecious intelligent dynamic young people of color wrestling with real issues that they can neither escape nor hope completely to understand.Tomine's no dummy: he keeps the issues secondary to his characters' messy humanity and gains incredible thematic resonance from this subordination. Tomine's dialogue is hilarious (he makes Seth Rogan seem a little forced), his secondary characters knockouts (Ben's Korean-American only friend Alice steals every scene she's in, and the Korean wedding they attend together as pretend-partners is a study in the even blending of tragedy and farce), and his dramatic instincts second-to-none. Besides orchestrating a gripping kick-ass story with people who feel like you've had the pleasure/misfortune of rooming with, Tomine does something far more valuable: almost incidentally and without visible effort (for such is the strength of a true artist) he explodes the tottering myth that love is blind and from its million phony fragments assembles a compelling meditation on the role of race in the romantic economy, dramatizing with evil clarity how we are both utterly blind and cannily hyperaware of the immense invisible power race exerts in shaping what we call desire. And that moment at the end when the whiteboy squares up against Ben, kung-fu style: I couldn't decide whether to fold over in laughter or to hug Ben or both. Tomine accomplishes in one panel of this graphic novel what so many writers have failed to do in entire books. In crisp spare lines, he captures in all its excruciating, disappointing absurdity a single moment and makes from it our world. This is a great graphic novel. I would recommend it in hardcover though. It was a quick read. I read it in a night, and enjoyed the Asian-American perspective. Growing up in the Bay Area, I also appreciated the setting even more. Overall, it was thought-provoking, and brought up themes that I have thought about, but never have seen too much about, especially in graphic novel form. This was my first time reading something by Tomine, and I'd like to check out more of his work.

This is a great graphic novella, possibly Tomine's best work to date, telling the dismal story of a disintegrating romance, as well as a wonderfully true-to-life friendship between two prickly, unlikable antihero characters. Ben Tanaka is the book's protagonist, a snarky, self-absorbed cynic who is doggedly pushing his longtime girlfriend away. In between sniping before-bed fights, Ben meets with his friend Alice, and equally cynical but more vivacious grad student who spends her time dodging her PhD exams while indulging in predatory affairs with freshmen students at the University of California, Berkeley. Ben and Alice are two of the most compelling characters to come along in adult comics in years -- they are utterly flawed and utterly likeable; if you enjoy the pleasures of crabby friends, these are people you'd like to hang out with. For me, as an SF East Bay local, the book has a special charm, as Ben frequents numerous Berkeley hot spots -- lunch and a stroll through the trendy Rockridge shopping district, the hustle and bustle of the crowded, grimy foodcourt on Durant Avenue, a conversation in the magazine atrium of Telegraph Avenue's legendary Cody's Books (now sadly closed) and a glimpse at the death of the venerable UC Theater, once Berkeley's greatest repertory movie house. (Ben's character is a manager at the UC Theater, and has to lay off his entire staff when the theater is hit by "temporary" seismic retrofits, which actually happened to the UC many years ago. The cost of the retrofits was too high for the struggling Landmark chain, and they sold the property to some developers who reneged on their promise to fix the theater up and reopen it under new management. The death of this cultural landmark was a great blow to the local community, and it's nice to see the UC immortalized here in Tomine's work. All that's missing is having Ben get a haircut at Frank the Barber's place, just down the street, and the picture would have been perfect.)Even if you're not from Berkeley or the Bay Area there's plenty to enjoy about this book, including its grim assessment of a doomed relationship, and its frank, scathingly un-PC discussions about race and identity for young Asian-American twenty-something hipsters. All in all, a fine work - I'm definitely looking forward to Tomine's next opus! (Joe Sixpack, ReadThatAgain book reviews)

Wow, this is just story telling at its finest. Ever watch an embarrassing moment in slow motion? That was the pace of the book. The main character's frustrations on society and his views of himself is overwhelmingly college-like. There are some very funny moments in the book. Adrian does a good job addressing some stereotypes but does not openly dispel any of it. I felt that he kind of spells it out for the reader but it is up to the reader to believe them or not and that might be worth more than the story itself. I found myself questioning on how much I really know about other cultures and let alone other cultures that have one or two generations in America. I hope that Adrian Tomine continues the main character in other books.

This book is just as I imagined from most reviews (which is good).Tomine has recreated a new and strange social dilemma of modern America. He accurately explains (through his characters) the grandiose ideas that distract two intelligent Asian Americans from the simpler and immediate discomfort they have with their identity, roles within their families and their personal relationships. My favorite aspect of the main character, Ben Tanaka, is he can't see how he causes his own problems. His jealousy, insecurity, and intellectual snobbery fuel his mean and cynical behavior toward his girlfriend. And the best part is, he's not even consciously aware of what he's doing!I like this because it is very accurate recreation of real life. And as the reader, we can objectively watch it unfold in front of us. You can see exactly where Ben Tanaka turns from kind boyfriend into a cynical brat. And he acts like a brat by his own choosing. This is a phenomenon all human beings share. Not realizing how their own behavior and attitudes are the cause of their life's problems. And the ideas of their era (in this case, identity and race in America) is a superficial lense through which many people try to understand their own suffering.Tomine has accurately described the very human conflict of emotions and ideals.-J_Tom_Moon_79

I've read this every couple of years since it was published and it's remarkable to me how much there is so much to see in this slight volume. My sympathies tend to rearrange on each reading -- Ben is the type of character that makes me veer between wanting to slap him and hug him in the space of a page or two. Tomine has such a knack at portraying awkward moments, there are a couple of scenes in here that feel so real it is almost as if they happened to me.One of my favorite realist graphic novels -- the entire thing just feels drawn from life.

All of Adrian's work is worth checking out. Yet, Shortcomings was a story that made me think about who I am more than any of Tomine's other works; nonetheless, the story and characters are as real as the air we breath. If you can't enjoy this work of art you may have to seek professional help. Enjoy Short Comings and all other work by Adrian Tomine--check out other Optic Nerve writings.

I ordered this for high school students doing research on the Harry Potter books, and my students have used a number of essays in the work. The essay by Dr. Rebecca Stephens was illuminating!

I was disappointed that the back cover of this book had very visible scratches on it when it arrived. It was a gift to someone so I felt it didn't reflect the price I had paid for it.

Reading Harry Potter: Critical Essays by Giselle Liza Anatol is a collection of essays that analyze to a greater depth the world of Harry Potter. This collection of essays only covers the first three books of the series. This collection came out before Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Reading Harry Potter Again is another series of essays from the same editor that came out after the Harry Potter series was finished. Even though the essay material is from the first three books of the Harry Potter series, Reading Harry Potter proved an excellent read. It was interesting to see the authors speculate on what would happen during the next books, especially having read them all prior to these essays. Some essays of particular interest were "Harry and Hierarchy" by Rebecca Stephens. This essay discussed the controversy of book banning as it relates to the Harry Potter series. The series was compared to the Chronicles of Narnia series in terms of magic and fantasy. The article pointed out that there were not that many differences other than C.S. Lewis, the author of the Chronicles of Narnia, was a pronounced Christian and J.K. Rowling was not. Because of this simple fact, Christians have argued for the banning of the Harry Potter series, when in fact the Chronicles of Narnia is no better.Another interesting essay was "Harry Potter and the Rule of Law" by Susan Hall. "Harry Potter and the Rule of Law" was about how corrupt the government figures are in the wizarding world. It discussed how innocent people are thrown into jail all of the time and sometimes let go with merely an apology. Harry Potter is all about rebellion. Even the teachers at Hogwarts rebel against the government, while the students rebel against the teachers. It's a hierarchy of power. The higher up you are, the more likely you are to be corrupt.Reading Harry Potter: Critical Essays is a great read if you are looking for some textual analysis and different ideas about the world of Harry Potter. Even though the material only comes from the first three books, it is still worth it. Reading Harry Potter Again would be an excellent follow-up to this book.

This book was recommended to me by my Children's Literature professor as a way to further explore the Harry Potter phenomenon. As a start to my reading of literary criticism in general, I absolutely loved this book. The essays were well written and brought many different subjects of Harry Potter into play that I normally wouldn't think about. It was a wonderful critique of the first 4 books and I can only hope the same authors write more now that the series is finished.

This book is an amazing anthology of literary criticisms of Harry Potter books 1-4. It brings to the forefront Rowling's social agenda, the fairy tale genre, ambiguity between good and evil, etc. Something that I would like to see in the future are new essays, or these essays rewritten, by the same authors in light of surprising changes to some characters' development particularly with Snape in Book 6. Otherwise, this book is an amazing read and is thoroughly enlightening.

This has to be something straight from the J. Evans Pritchard vault of pseudo lit. Pompous and condescending, it merits no mention and no attention. If you are a HP fan, stay away from this garbage.

Copper was the fourth book in Lilly Atlas’ Hell’s Handlers MC series. We’ve been watching Copper and Shell since book one.Copper was the Hell’s Handler’s President. He was forty and had the weight of the MC on his shoulders. Before the last MC President was killed and Copper took over, he promised him that he would always look after his daughter, who was sixteen years his junior and eleven at the time of her father’s death. Said daughter was now grown up and had a daughter of her own.Michelle “Shell” Ward was a single mom to Beth and she kept loads of secrets. She was loyal to the Hell’s Handler’s even after her father was killed and her mother cut all ties. They were her family and she would die for them. She had loved Copper from afar since she was a teenager but he had made it known over the years that she was merely a child to him and he didn’t return her feelings.Copper and Shell had been dancing around the chemistry since we met them. Copper refused to act upon it due to their age difference but he always protected her and Beth at all costs. Their relationship finally came to a head and we slowly learned the secrets Shell was keeping as Atlas unraveled more of the mystery behind the Hell’s Handlers.I enjoyed the big picture of the storyline; however, it was hard to stomach at times - nothing bad between Copper and Shelly or even the Hell’s Handler favorites, but a few new faces made my stomach queasy. It was still well written and well developed, but personally not my favorite storyline. All in all, it was fairly quick, steamy, suspenseful and an enjoyable read. The primary plot concluded but there were several open ended details that will carry over into future books. I’m not sure where Atlas will take us but there are still several stories to tell. I can’t wait to see where she leads us next.

Lilly Atlas is one of my favorite MC authors and this series is AWESOME!! I love each book in this series and been waiting for Copper and Shell’s book anxiously and IT WAS FREAKING WORTH THE WAIT!!So many emotions when reading this book.I swooned, laughed and wanted to throw my kindle to the wall. That’s when you know you’re reading a good book.Shell is an amazing heroine. She went through so much and was so strong. Love how she loved Copper and her loyalty to him and the club. She’s the perfect queen for president.Love their chemistry and d@mn Copper was hot!!If you’re a fan of MC books with strong heroines and protective and hot Alpha males, you should read this book.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book had me want to hurl my kindle across the room more than ones. Epic love story with a hero who is swoon worthy, heroine who is so much in love that she will do whatever she has to do to keep the hero and the club safe. When we find out your heart will stall. You will hate the villain his manipulation, smug arrogance. You will want to scream at Copper, skip pages, not because the story is boring but because you want to hurry the truth out and see the villains deception and hate is destroyed, so yeah this book was excellent . Do yourself a favour, make sure you find a quiet room wher no one can disturb you because heads will roll if your mind is ripped from this story. Happy reading.

Copper is the president of the Handlers MC and he has had a thing for Shell for a long time but he has always keep his distance because he is 16 years older but that is all about to change. Shell has been in love with copper all her life but she has been keeping a big secret and knows it will destroy her relationship with copper. They have just started to explore a relationship together when the one thing that will tear them apart comes back into their lives. So enjoy the read and see if their relationship will Survive the secrets She’ll has been keeping for seven years !!

This was a fast-paced but well-written book in the Hell's Handlers MC series featuring the president, Copper, the woman who's loved him forever, Shell, and a group of loyal, caring, brothers and their old ladies. Copper has done what he could to stay away from Shell, citing her age as a factor since she's much younger than him. When he hits 40, things change. I totally enjoyed this series and look forward to whatever comes next!

Another 5 stars for Lilly Atlas! The story we've been waiting for finally! And what a tale it was!! Shell loved Copper forever but feared when her secrets were revealed, her chance of a happy ever after would disappear. Even knowing these two belonged together, the odds seemed insurmountable, tension built to the end! Love this series, can't wait for more Handler's. Can Rocket be next in line?

Copper and Shell have been mentioned in all the four books so everyone is aware of their feelings for each other. Big drawback of them getting together is the fact that Shell is fifteen years younger than Copper so he doesn't want to act on it. Lots of twists and turns but this is the best written book in the series, you must get it !

Not my favorite book but I still enjoyed. I have been waiting for Cop & Shell’s book since they were introduces in Zach (which is my favorite in the series). I sometimes feel when an author teases you with a couple over several books their book never lives up to what we imagine. That being said I would still recommend reading Cooper.

Girls' Club: Cultivating Lasting Friendship in a Lonely World, by Sally Clarkson Joy Clarkson

Review

Told in three alternating voices―those of missionary Sally Clarkson (Own Your Life) and her daughters, Sarah (Read for the Heart) and Joy―this book of welcoming advice extols the power of female friendships and the grace of God’s love and mercy. “We are bonded together by God’s love―that wonderful power that made and loves us all,” Joy writes. Lessons are mostly grounded in scriptural passages but are not overly preachy. “You are never alone in this great work of friendship; God is always first, loving you and filling you in such a way that you can reach out to others,” Sarah counsels. Sally asks: What does community looks like? And how does one learn to create it? “I’ve been learning that community can be boiled down to three powerful words, the same ones Paul chose to end his famous description of enacted love in 1 Corinthians 13: faith, hope, and love,” she notes. But creating these communities doesn’t start by accident, she writes. Deep, long-term, soul-satisfying friendship takes hard work, the authors argue, and they offer practical advice on how to become a reliable friend (stay in contact), meet a friend’s needs (stick to commitments), and champion faith, truth, and integrity. This wise book provides Christian women with a sensible road to creating a loving, faith-filled community. (Publishers Weekly)

I recently discovered Sally Clarkson's parenting books and have fallen in love with her grace infused style of writing. I was so excited to hear that she was releasing a book with her two daughters on the meaningful impact friendship can have on a woman's life. This book does not disappoint. It gives clear guidance and encouragement on how to handle some of the difficult aspects of friendships and how to overcome the loneliness so many of us feel in the depths of our souls. As a mom of four daughters, I loved hearing Sally's daughters insights on friendships in general, but especially on their friendship with their mom. Highly recommend this book!

In the preview chapters I received as part of the launch team I fell in love again with another Clarkson book! This timely and much needed book about the need for real, tangible, soul fulfilling friendships in a world that is profoundly lonely and longing for connection that just can't be reached through social media is absolutely amazing and needs to be shared with all! This book shares all 3 of their own personal journeys in friendship to encourage, challenge and inspire us all (married and single) to reach out to people in the real world and cultivate friendships and to understand that you can be loved, are loved, and can extend love to others because the creator of all things made you and loves you immensely. This book is very timely and I cannot wait for it's message to be heard throughout the world❤️

If you feel lonely and trapped and don’t know why, this book answers that in Chapter 2 very eloquently by Sarah. The rest of the book is:“the practices of a holy rebellion that we in the Girls’ Club have learned to live by as we combat the isolating patterns of life in a far-too-busy world. It’s a work of constant reevaluation as we repeatedly examine our lives, our habits, our exhaustion, asking ourselves how we can step out of a frenzied loneliness and into a present connection...”What we get from Sally and her adult, best friend daughters, is a personal testimony of their own journey through loneliness and practical ideas of how to initiate friendships, stop listening to the inner head talk that we aren’t lovable, and reach forward in hope.I also purchased the Girls’ Club Companion that has specific exercises/questions that can be done with any committed friend…..to make that friendship go deep. The Clarkson women have made the pathway clear and so helpful.Thank you Sally, Sarah, & Joy! You are a catalyst to a powerful sisterhood rebellion!

Oh my, what beautiful thoughts and sentiments are expressed by such wonderful thinkers and writers in just one book! I love seeing the perspective that each lovely soul brings to this subject of friendship among women. It is even more heartwarming to realize that they are mother and daughters. They show us that it is possible to build friendships within our family and to build lasting relationships with friends that go deep and benefit us in ways that are not only pleasant but necessary to the quality of our lives. I came away inspired to try harder to develop lasting friendships with other women and with some tools to help me do that.

Another beautiful, relevant message from the Clarkson family. Written from the perspective of three different women - a mother and her two daughters, each in different seasons of life - it gives a rich, dynamic discussion to meet readers of all life stages. Covering the inescapable pain of loneliness, the invaluable gift of life-long friendship, and practical ideas for cultivating relationships in your own life, this book gets to the heart of the issue. I am looking forward to the ways this book enriches my ability to not just discover stronger friendships, but also to be a better friend to the women in my life. A beautiful book - recommend for mothers and daughters, books clubs, sisters, MOPS, and more!

In our busy states, consumed by all the things we have deemed urgent, we are faced with an epidemic of loneliness. The Girls’ Club Book addresses the value of cultivating true, deep, and lasting friendships from a Kingdom perspective. Filled with truth, heart warming stories, and a bit of honesty that can step on your toes and make you examine your own habits, this is a life-giving book that every Christian woman, young and old, should read, ponder, and act on.

We are all learning every single day. Sometimes we think we know how to be a friend or think, "I wish they would include me," or "I am a good friend!" God does not want us to be lonely, He wants us to embrace our friendships, cultivate them. Whose in your tribe? This book will help you find your purposeful goal of creating your own girls club, get out of being lonely and celebrate your friendships. With God all things are possible! Be an intentional friend... Take time for you & read this amazing book packed with personal stories & heart tugging real-life stuff! You'll be glad you did!

Loved the encouragement and conviction I encountered in the first three chapters that I got to preview. I have known both the loneliness without support of community as well as the strength and endurance that I’m capable of with people buoying me up. These sweet ladies write from their hearts and their own struggles. I’m excited to use these principles in building my own girls’ club around me, especially with my five daughters!!
