Chinese New Year is an excellent little book for kids between 1st and 4th grade. For the younger ones you'll need to help with the reading. For the older ones, it's more of a cliff notes version to get a rudimentary understanding of the Festival. Filled with bright pictures that are primarily foreground focus pictures (background being blurry), the images really pop out. Every other page has a little information on the festival such as what happens, when things happen and sometimes why they are celebrated the way they are. The book is saturated in the color red for obvious reasons. My personal opinion is this book would be a fun picture book for a younger child or even a quick book for educational story time that won't take long. The digital version is 22 pages. For older children, this would be a quick reference for a fast book report or if the school is doing any education around Chinese New Year it's a good prep. I have very few complaints, and considering the audience this book is meant for it wasn't enough to knock a star off it. Some of the grammar isn't perfect. Very few people will catch the errors. I would have liked to know more of why they explained some traditions and not others. Also, some of the words are definitely out of age range. Example: idioms. What young child knows this word? It's great to learn new words, but if the adult is leaving the child to their own devices with this book, you may get a few questions. Be prepared! None of said words are hard for an adult, they might be hard depending on the child you give the book to. That said, this is a great little book and I would even recommend getting the hard copy as children notoriously will want to touch the pictures and that's just not the same as digital format. Another reviewer said they weren't a fan of the ending, I would have to agree that the ending was a little awkward and weak compared to the rest of the book.I received this product for free on a promotional discount for my honest review and they are 100% my own opinions. Chinese New Year for kids could not have arrived at a better time since 1) Chinese New Year is in a mere 2-3 days from now and 2) I wanted to introduce Asia for Social Studies this week. Great timing.One thing I like about the speedy publishing books sold by Baby Professor is that they are e books. I can log in to my Amazon account at work and have access to this book which I can then share with my students via smartboard. This type of technology allows my students to be able to read along with me as I share the book to the class, as well as giving students a clearer look at the photographs in the book.I thought this book was lovely and did a fairly good job describing what Chinese New Year is like as well as some of the customs and traditions. I wish it had went more into depth on some of the traditions but I feel as if this is a good stepping stone for beginning readers to learn about China's culture and traditions.I received this product at a discounted price in exchange for your honest and unbiased review.
