Having always wanted to learn how to play mah jongg, I found myself in a room where there was a group actually playing the game. I got to watch them for a few minutes and realized that it isn't easy at all. So this book has given me a great opportunity to learn the basics so I can enjoy this great game.

Good summary for Chinese Mahjongg but it isn't a book on American Mahjongg.

I bought this as a reference book to teach friends how to play Mah Jong. The title suggests that it is an INSTRUCTION BOOK for learning the rules, sets, and art of the Game. IT IS NOT INSTRUCTIONAL AT ALL. I expected pictures, examples, etc. This is a game that must be SEEN to understand the rules. NO PICTURES TO SHOW TILES OR EXAMPLES OF HANDS IN THE BOOK. I wrote that I wanted to return it looking for a way to do that, and I was told to keep it. I have purchased Elizabeth Sanders book for beginners.. I hope it is better. thank you, Benita Gerstenfeld

I should have read the reviews before ordering. If I could I would assign 1/2 star. This is not American Mah Jongg, it's not even a very good instruction book on Chinese Mah Jong. It does have a lot of history information and definitions about the game (again Chinese Mah Jong). If you want a good book to learn American Mah Jongg, I would recommend A Beginners Guide to American Mah Jongg by Elaine Sandberg.

The rules listed are not the same as the ones printed in the National MahJongg League,Inc. rule book. Not atall helpful for new players.

Very confusing. No real directions. Not even pictures as to what the setup looks like. No pictures of sets of tiles used. Explanation of how to play was nonexistent. Don’t buy this book. You won’t know any more than you do now.

If you have a desire to understand the world beneath your feet in the Catskills, this book is a must. It is great for anyone who reads and who has a natural curiosity, including children, in the mountains and rolling hills of the beautiful Catskill region. It is well illustrated and lays out the best, easiest to understand, geologic history of how the Catskills came into being.This book also encourages the reader to join in conservancy, and try to leave nature untouched for others to enjoy. While this is not always possible, it is always something to strive for. If you are looking to collect, I encourage you to join a local paleontological group rather than randomly hack away outcroppings, unless it is your property of course...and even then, try to limit the destruction.

Very good, easy-to-read book on the origins of the Catskill Mountains, written vividly and with fairly good illustrations. I just used it as a guide to a couple of places, and found it very useful. It's very broad, covering the origins, the fossils, etc. I recommend it for anyone interested in the Catskills region, especially people who live in ornear them.

No one knows Catskills geology more thoroughly, or writes about it more engagingly and eloquently, than Hartwick College's Bob Titus. There is a real art to turning the dry facts of ancient boulders and Devonian shale into highly entertaining prose - and Titus has mastered that art.

The photo on the cover is just one example of the many beautiful pieces of art that were included in the book. I was amazed to see how many unbelievably gorgeous works of art were included. The image quality was very good. The artist included detailed descriptions of materials and process for every piece. This outstanding book inspired me and helped me understand how to create colorful, emotionally charged mixed media landscapes.

Soraya, has accomplished so much in her newest book. This is my favorite mixed media landscape book to date and I have a lot of mixed media books. I would have said that this book is geared more for the experienced artist, but artists who are learning about technique would do well to have this book to grow into because of the brilliant way Soraya covers subjects. Some of the subjects she covers are, composition. the elements of art, lost and found edges, negative shapes, underpainting, texture effects, and of course multiple mediums. Soraya also is very encouraging in that as artists we are not limited by just one medium, there is so much information and art materials out there and to only use what you feel comfortable with. I couldn't agree with her more, as a self taught artist myself, its taken me a few years and a few different mediums to get to the point where I feel comfortable using different materials. Mixed media is about using your intuition, taking chances and playing, its all so exciting.

It is informative and helpful for those working in mixed media. As a mm artist of some 30 years, there wasn't really anything new in the book that I didn't already know, but it helped me move on from a 'block' in my own work.

This book explores a wide range of creating vibrant landscapes, based on acrylic mediums, but also with other materials to augment it. More of a discussion level than a step-by-step, and therefore, more appropriate for intermediate to advance painters. Also, not a lot of unnecessary filler with same old basic supplies. This is a book for people who already have a lot of supplies, and are looking for additional ways to make use of them.

A truly inspirational reference for landscape painters beautifully illustrated. Highly recommended for beginners to experienced artists. I have her other books and eagerly await the next one. I did not hesitate to pre-order "Contemporary Landscapes in Mixed Media" before it was published and I have been delighted with the book.

As an oil painter whose previous experience with acrylics was limited to base coating canvases, and grumbling over the results of anything else I tried, I have so enjoyed this book. Not only has it inspired me to try all sorts of different acrylics, but other mediums as well. And my efforts have literally paid off, as several of the pieces with which I've experimented have sold. The reason I've given it four stars instead of five, is I'd like to have had better explanations of the process used in creating the examples. The images were wonderful, incidentally. Anyone interested in breaking the mold should try this book!

I Purchased this book to experience the acrylic medium and to find a way to make my paintings more loose in the contemporary style for landscapes. This book full filled all my expectations. I have painted for years in oil and wanted to experience acrylic. Although the steps are not given, for me as an experienced painter I was able to create paintings with the directions she provided. These methods have increased my repertoire for how to paint using different techniques and ideas. I can take this new knowledge and apply many of them to oil painting which is still my medium of choice. I’m throughly enjoying this book and may buy another by this author.

About half to three quarters of the way through the book, many of the example pictures were no longer present. A title would be shown at the bottom of a blank page. Save your money.

I purchased this book in order to advance my knowledge with excel. I want to learn more advanced topics using excel.The text is easy to follow and starts off with the basics (which I expected and I am perfectly comfortable with). The textbook often refers to spreadsheets needed to perform the exercises described in the book. The publisher DID NOT include access to these spreadsheets with the purchase of their textbook.A serious downside for this purchase has been the customer service from the publisher. I have asked the publisher for help toward obtaining the excel documents three times now (2 emails and one phone call). The phone call lasted 33 minutes and I was on hold for approx. 28 of the 33 minutes.Their website is NOT easy to navigate for help and my first written request for help was punted back to me telling me to contact another department without providing clear direction for how to contact the other department. I FINELY found a phone number to call. I already described the length of the call above. While they were nice on the phone I doubted the sincerity in their promise in getting me the information I required in order to enhance my training using their textbook.I STILL DO NOT have the excel spreadsheets required for the textbook and I am NOT optimistic that the publisher will follow through on their promise to me in providing those documents. I have not heard back from them regarding my request for help and/or the status of my request (if, in fact, they are truly trying to help).

The best part about this textbook is it's hands-on style. If you learn by doing, the format is great! The instructor sets the due dates and assignments, but outside of that, it is possible to work on each of the chapters and do just fine without much guidance. I wish there were a ranking system for textbooks that indicated the type of learning style that is most strongly supported. Maybe one of the future users of this textbook will come up with a system. :)Note: If you will be taking the MOS certification, some additional training may be beneficial.

Well written, clear exercises. I am taking the class through a community college, but I think one could use this text on their own to prepare for a certificate test if they wished.

Danowski suggests that a child's orientation to food will change naturally when parents make changes for themselves first. The author goes so far as to suggest banning food-related celebrations and food rewards for good behavior, which she argues are a logical extension of culturally-supported but emotionally and psychologically unhealthy attitudes about food. The author suggests arts and crafts exercises and other routine changes to family activities designed to strengthen the family unit. The goal: creating and understanding positive emotions without the mention or use of food. The author's own extreme approach to healthy eating when shared takes away from her otherwise practical advice. About the Author

In her previously published book, Why Can't I Stop Eating? co-authored with Dr. Pedro Lazaro (Hazelden 2000), Dr. Danowski outlines her personal physical, emotional, and spiritual food-addiction recovery program, which resulted in her losing more than 150 pounds over 17 years ago. A regular guest on both national and international radio programs, Why Can't I Stop Eating? was Hazelden's best-selling trade book the summer of 2000. The book is currently in its third printing.Dr. Danowski has written more than 100 articles for national and local publications, including First For Women, Woman's Day, Seventeen, and Fairfield, and serves as a contributing writer for Fairfield County Home magazine. She has also spoken at countless meetings, seminars and conferences about weight loss and food addiction, including Food Addiction 2000, the first national conference held on the disease.Dr. Danowski is also the advisor to both Sacred Heart University's student newspaper and student magazine, and a member of the university's Eating Disorders Awareness Team. She holds a Ph.D. in Education from Capella University in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she researched eating behavior in American film, a Master's degree in Public Communications from Syracuse University, and a Bachelor of Science in business administration from Sacred Heart University.She resides in Winsted, Connecticut.
