Review

"When Elephants Fly is a compelling read, beautifully threading the complex relationship between mothers and daughters, mental illness and elephants."-National Book Award finalist Carrie Arcos "Not only does this book show the reader the perils of keeping elephants in zoos and having them perform in circuses, it does it with heart, grace, and imagination." -Nina Berry, author of The Notorious Pagan Jones and the Otherkin series "Unlike anything I've read before in YA, When Elephants Fly is both a fascinating adventure and a stirring coming-of-age novel. There are few clear heroes or villains, and no easy answers for Lily as she moves into an uncertain future. The bond between elephant and girl is deftly wrought-reminiscent of Alec and the Black in Walter Farley's classic, The Black Stallion, but for an older, contemporary audience." -Sara Zarr, author of Gem & Dixie, National Book Award finalist "When Elephants Fly will inspire readers to love through fear, to love themselves and their humanity, to love the world." - Jenny Torres Sanchez, author of The Fall of Innocence "Nancy Richardson Fischer deserves high praise for her well-researched and endearing novel. Her imagination, craft, and effort has resulted in her writing a piece of fiction that is worthy of winning a prize. This really is an outstanding piece of fiction that cannot be recommended enough." –New York Journal of Books "As much a story about mental health as it is about compassion and evolution." –School Library Journal "Fischer's story encompasses the themes of love, courage, and forgiveness with lively, well-rounded characters, not the least of whom is Swifty. Lily is especially vibrant as she evolves from her quiet, safe existence into someone who recognizes the difference between simply being alive and living." –Booklist "Compelling...Provides a relevant and relatable character in an often overlooked subject area." –TeenReads.com "Nancy Richardson Fischer has managed to combine so many important topics-family, mental illness, extinction, animal welfare, and adolescence-into an accessible, moving and extraordinary story." -Ellen C. O'Connell, Executive Vice President, Global, Space for Giants "This book was an absolute pleasure to read. I encourage everyone to read this inspirational book and discuss mental illness and tolerance and the need to improve wildlife protection." -Katie Rowe, Pritzker Genius Award nominee, Co-founder Reteti Elephant Sanctuary

When elephants fly is such an inspirational and uplifting book. The author deftly addresses mental health, family, and relationship issues in a compelling story of an unlikely heroine on a quest to save an elephant calf. It is a clear and well-written story that is great for adults, teens and book clubs.

I couldn't put this book down! It shines a light on so many important topics while telling a wonderful story that keeps you hooked. It made me think, cry, and laugh, while following T. Lily and Swifty's journey together. It shares realistic truths about the world we live in through a heart warming story of a young woman coming into her own and the special bonds that can be shared with animals. It's a great story for teenage or adult readers.

A delicate book that offers an important story, while also benefiting elephants. One of the best change-maker books of 2018.

This book had me hooked from the first page!. I loved the characters, the twists in the plot and couldn't stop thinking about the book once I had finished. You really should read this book!!

Beautiful book.

I received an early release copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher. As a person with an education background in psychology, I had some misgivings about the subject matter of this novel going into it. Lily's schizophrenic mother tried to kill her when she was a young girl. Lily struggles to deal with that trauma and also the looming threat of developing the disorder herself, given the genetic component. Schizophrenia is a such a highly stigmatized illness, and a novel with a schizophrenic character committing such a dramatic act of violence at the center of the story is concerning. While delusions in thought can cause a person with schizophrenia to become violent, most people living with this disorder are not violent and are at far greater risk of harming themselves than they are anyone else. So while Lily's story is certainly not out of the realm of possibility in the real world, these are important things to keep in mind when reading a story like this. That being said, I do think that Fischer made efforts to treat the subject matter with sensitivity. She has used Lily's concerns about developing the disorder as a means to relay information to the reader; Lily has researched this topic tirelessly as a means of maintaining a sense of control over her life and mental health, and is aware, for example, of the risk of suicide for patients dealing with this disorder. Lily is a very sympathetic protagonist who is acutely aware of her risk of developing this disorder; she also gives the reader a window into what it feels like to be unfairly dismissed based on their mental health status.Certain characters look down on Lily based on the mere possibility that she may have inherited her mother's illness; should this possibility prove to be true, the contempt would be that much worse. Any and all of Lily's opinions can be dismissed based on the speculated status of her mental health. For an insecure and yet passionate young woman just emerging into adulthood, this is excruciating. And then there's Swifty. I got so emotionally invested in this baby elephant; Lily's connection with Swifty is palpable, and my heart broke for both of them as Swifty struggled after being rejected by her mother. Many of the passages about Swifty are very well written, but some of them showcase the novel's main weakness, in my opinion. It's very clear that Fischer wanted this novel to educate, and that's admirable. However, with a 400 page book dealing with intricate subjects such as mental health, adolescence, parenting, and animal rights, the information may not always be woven seamlessly into the story. Certain passages felt forced and awkward. It sometimes felt like the author's own research was pasted into the story without regard to the overall flow of the novel; it had the effect of pulling the reader momentarily out of the story.Overall, this was a strong novel. It was well-paced with a well-developed and sympathetic protagonist. The story was interesting and multi-faceted. It brought us a character who, despite her overwhelming anxiety about her mental health, is more than her mental health status. Lily has people who love her deeply and a cause she's willing to fight for.

There are not enough words to explain to you that this book is so good and a must read! The moment I read the synopsis I knew I had to read this one and it did not disappoint in the least bit. T. Lily is a girl who has a family history of schizophrenia and the odds of her getting it does not look good for her. So her and her dad are determined to have her live an easy going stress free life. That is until she meets Swifty the elephant and her world is turned upside down. It was so powerful to read Lily start putting herself first and living her life instead of being afraid of it. Going on this journey was so inspiring and a very meaningful read and exactly the kind of YA book you want to see out there! I can't thank the author enough for this amazing read and one of my tops reads for 2018!

I started out this one a little unsure how I would feel about it, but by the end of the book I was so glad I was able to just sit and read with no interruptions, because this was such a page-turner. There were so many different aspects to this story. So many things that tugged at my heart. Not only the big things talked about in the synopsis, the fact that Lily is worried about schizophrenia taking over her life and the baby elephant, Swift Jones - or Swifty, whose mom has rejected her, but also Lily's best friend Sawyer who has a family that does not support him, even going so far as to forcing him to move out. And then there is the circus that takes ownership of the Swifty, and while there are the issues that you'd imagine with a circus and animals, there are even more things going on behind the scenes and between the family members that run it. Not to mention that Lily finds out things about her dad and mom's relationship, and comes to realize just why her father was doing the things he was the way he did after her mom was gone.I learned a lot about elephants, and a lot about schizophrenia as well. I knew that schizophrenia was a complicated and oftentimes scary mental illness, but didn't realize all the types there were, and just all the ways it could manifest. I also didn't know how much it could be overcome in some cases, and that it wasn't a set cure of just taking medicine and being okay.It was actually a little nice bit of a break to get a girl that was as innocent as Lily was, boyfriend-wise, sexually, etc., and to get a story that fit that type of a teenager perfectly. I feel like I'd been pretty close to that aspect in my teen years. So I enjoyed the way that was done in the book. By the end I was just so into the story I couldn't put it down, and finished it really quickly, hoping that they'd be able to save Swifty, and that other things would resolve themselves as well.

#15,986 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I’ll get right to the flaws of this novel. It’s dry and self-centered. The setup is intriguing. A relatively newly married couple, with two kids each from previous relationships, is trying to make a life together. The couple met and connected while working on a research project together. But that project is completed and now they are working on separate, individual projects, and that is bringing challenges to their relationship. And then they’re going through all the usual ups and downs of parenting, with the added factor of each of the kids now being raised by a parent who is not their biological mom/dad. The big problem is the author’s first person narrator tells of their lives in a dry way, mostly via her own thoughts and perceptions. I get that this is not an action-based novel, but rather a contemplative one. But it winds up feeling more like a series of journal entries than a story. And the narrator is so self-centered as to be annoying, plus her self absorption makes it so that she never really draws out the other characters enough to make them come to life and seem interesting. Instead of a 400-page novel with so much dry narrative, this should have been a 250-page one where the narrator showed us all that happened among the characters and allowed us room to have our own perceptions about them and their experiences.

Tell Me How It Ends is the kind of book I told people about for months after I read it--so I've been (im)patiently waiting for Luiselli's next work. It does not disappoint. It's beautiful, original, luminous, and provocative. I'm not one to write long reviews. If a book moves me, it moves me. If it challenges me, it challenges me. Lost Children Archive did all of that. It's such a stunning read.I'd like to get this book into everyone's hands in the country right now. We all need to think harder and act faster with compassion. This might be a novel, but the lost children? All real.

This is a road trip novel but not a typical one—a family drives from New York to Arizona in search of the home of the Apaches. Really, though, the family is facing a crisis of its own and by hitting the road seems to be attempting to hold itself together. Playing out in parallel is the immigration crisis with dire reports coming into the family car via the radio. This is a complex literary work, perfect for readers who love a challenge and who don’t need a lot of plot to keep reading. The immigration aspects as well as the overlap between the Native American experiences and those of the Mexican immigrants were thought-provoking for me and not something I’ve seen handled this way in other novels, at least not yet. This is an innovative and rewarding read, but you’ll have to work as a reader to stay focused without the traditional inducements of drama or suspense.

Valeria Luiselli’s Lost Children Archive is a novel about borders & families written concurrently with her powerful essay on the same subject Tell Me How It Ends. Where that essay is tight in its scope & focus on the bureacracy of immigration policy, this novel is expansive & experimental. Luiselli’s narrator is masterful in her weaving of texts & images & sources--photographs, novels, poems, songs, government documents, and sound recordings all create a multi-faceted entrance to the action. About halfway through the novel, another character--the stepchild of the narrator--takes over the narration. This new narrative POV really pays off, particularly in a whirlwind of a stream-of-conscious chapter late in the novel that must be read to be believed. Lost Children Archive is a surprisingly suspenseful story, for a novel so thorough in literary erudition & historical context. The resolution is cathartic in the Athenian tragic sense of the word: It purges us of pity & fear, and it challenges us to think about what has become of the institutions that rule us, what will become of the polity in which we live.

I have given myself a 50-page rule. I'll read 50 pages of any book and if, by that time I don't like it, I won't continue. I read more than 50 pages in this case but could not finish. It is poorly written, the narrative is minimalist and the writing is immature. The characters are nameless, but in a postured and unrealistic way. There is 'the father', 'the son', 'the daughter', etc. There is no depth to the character development. In fact, they seemed like cut-outs to me. The gist of the story is that the husband and the wife meet on an oral history project and later marry. Each has a child from a former relationship and they are integrated into a semblance of a family. They live in New York City and for some obscure reason, the father wants to travel to Arizona to study the history of Apache indians. The wife doesn't really want to go but they pack up and leave anyway. The wife figures she can study the impact of separating immigrant children from their mothers. If you want to read a looooonnnnngggg and boring book, this is a definite sleep inducer. How it came to be published is a mystery to me.

The Lost Children Archive provides a powerful look at the current immigration system and a glaring parallel reflection on the atrocities forced on Native Americans. It is a reminder that the echoes of (America’s) history, good or bad, are not erased with time. Luiselli’s use of a family road trip as a plot format brought love and humanity to this book and made it compulsively readable. Without being preachy, Luiselli reminds us to listen, not just to what is current, but also to the past.
