This book in an earlier rendition was very helpful to my daughter. Once you have an idea of what you want to major in, you can choose the colleges or universities that are strongest in that field of study. Then you can easily write reasons or answer questions on why you chose that particular college and what you hope to do with your life. I recommended the book to a relative, and also recently bought an updated copy for a friend's daughter. I highly recommend using the book along with big packets of different colored Post-it Notes to help with the bookmarking and whittling down process.

My daughter was able to find out about some engineering majors she did not know existed. It would have been more helpful if we could see the courses offered at some of the universities mentioned in the book.

There is a glaring blind spot among Conservative economists who speak breathlessly about freedom and distribution of power yet completely ignore the threat brought on by the disparity of wealth. The growing gap was what Marx saw as the eventual destroyer of Capitalism. Conservatives, on the other hand, see the disparity not as a problem but as a solution to pure democracy where a street sweeper has the same one vote as a CEO. Extreme wealth puts the power back in the hands of the people most capable of wielding it.Mr. Galbraith takes a look back at the evolution of economics starting with the early belief that the average worker would always earn just enough to survive and perhaps raise a family. Later Herbert Spencer expounded his Social Darwinian view of economics that has shown a resurgence in the last few decades. The original view was that social programs literally allow inferior genetic lines to procreate and dilute society. It was the collapse of the stock market in the 1930's that put Social Darwinism on the back burner. Although Marx correctly predicted the collapse, the economy recovered and the increasing disparity never created a revolution in the United States. This, however, may have been thanks to the many wealth redistribution programs created after the Great Depression. The author also points out that there is more of a physical separation between the economic strata's and ostentatious displays of wealth have become at best passé at worst vulgar.The book punches a hole in the theory that productivity declines as worker security increases. One need only look at the dramatic rise in both production and security after World War II. As Mr. Galbraith points out it's always the OTHER guy who should give up security. Corporations and corporate heads work to create a broad cushion of support for themselves while decrying additional safeguards for workers as wasteful of needed capital. Although the author generally supports growth over wealth distribution as a way to improve society he is far more pragmatic than Conservative economists. Unlike right wing ideologists, Mr. Galbraith recognizes that the market often focuses on the things society needs least. There will always be a need for balance between public and private funding in particular for large scale research projects and public goods like education that the market shows a lack of interest in. The author doesn't seemed to have the same mystical reverence for market forces that some economists exhibit. He also has little respect for the federal reserves ability to even out market fluctuations using monetary policy (conservatives) or fiscal policy (liberals). Even with his support of business growth Mr. Galbraith recognizes that growth obsession can be a dangerous thing for, among other things, creating increasingly unmanageable debt in a heavily consumption based society.There seems to be a definite slant in economics towards the desires of the business class which includes worshipping at the altar of deregulated, free market Capitalism. John Kenneth Galbraith is a refreshingly non-ideological view of economics which actually recognizes that perhaps it's better to offer opportunities to the poor rather than kicks to the teeth to encourage growth out of poverty.

It's interesting how many of these topics have come even more to the forefront in the last 5 years, and how the discussion has changed, evolved, and collapsed in some cases. I bought this book because the description said "Used like New". Turned out to be a tattered old book with pages all browned and dogeared!I'm returning the book and would like a replacement which should be really "like New".

I was disappointed when I first received this book because I was searching for the Easton Press version of the same book. The picture that is shown is an Easton Press version of this book. That is a very difficult thing for me about AMAZON is that they don't distinguish much between books for collectors. Now that being said... The Franklin Press Version is a very nice book and it was just as described. (Other than that the seller didn't distinguish that this was a Franklin Press Book).

This novel is not easy for me to review since I’ve seen the movie first. In truth, I didn’t even know it was a book until I seen it on the shelf in the library a few years back. I wished I would of check it out then. At the same time, I’m not sure that having done that, I would have read The Rules of Magic because while this story is great, there are years (22 years) of storytelling experience between Practical Magic and The Rules of Magic. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still well-written, but there is a difference. Overall, it’s still another great story of the bonds of sisterhood, the tragedy, and triumph of love. Another great adventure by Alice Hoffman.In this novel, you get all the great magical prose as you do in The Rules of Magic. The storyline is similar, but with drastically different life experiences, content, and events. I loved that as it added to the whole Owens women are all destined for an enchanting life vibe.I’m sure some want to know how it compares to the movie. You can’t compare the two. They are peas and carrots. I can’t say I like one better than the other because this novel is very different from the movie. With the novel, there is more depth about Sally and Gillian’s life from childhood to adulthood. Even better, there is more narrative for Antonia and Kylie as they grow into their teens.I love the movie and I always will, but I love the book differently. Either way, I adore this family of sincere and driven women and the final page brought on the same dread as the last page of The Rules of Magic. I simply didn’t want it to end.

To preface my review I felt it necessary to mention that I read the prequel to this book titled, The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman prior to reading Practical Magic. Since Fall had finally begun and Halloween (my favorite holiday) was right around the corner reading Practical Magic just felt right . In my opinion reading the perquel helped me to better understand the history of the Owens family curse and the role it has played for generations. You cannot help but fall in love with ALL the Owens women including the ancient and mysterious aunts Francis and Jet (the main characters in the prequel) who took up residence in the infamous Owens family home established by their ancestor Maria Owens Hundreds of earlier. The aunts also took over the "family business" of magic...creating potions, remidies and of course the art of spell casting that has been passed down from generation to generation. The main characters in Practical Magic, sisters Sally and Gillian find themselves parentless and orphaned with only the aunts to turn to. Their world is completely turned upside down in a single evening and when the girls arrive at their aunts they soon discover the truth of who and what they really are. It seems that through out history the Owens women have tried to deny, hid and run away from who they really are, but fate always has its way of bringing out the truth and bringing the sisters and their aunts back together. Sally and Gillian are complete opposites from day one, but blood, family, the curse and of course love brings this family closer and closer. This book is a true testament to the powerful bond of sisters, the importance of family and the dangers that await along the road to self acceptance. There is also a movie called Practical Magic that is based on this book, if you love the book I would recommend watching the movie as well...but read the book and/or books first. Honestly, you should ready both books: The Rules of Magic (prequel) and Practical Magic prior to watching the movie Practical Magic. This was a fast but great weekend read. I highly recommend reading both books in this series by Alice Hoffman and if you enjoyed them watch the movie. The book of course was better than the movie with a few different twists. Nicole Kidman (Gillian Owens) and Sandra Bullock (Sally Owens) bring this story to life in the movie Practical Magic, they could not have picked 2 better women to play these fabulous characters Alice Hoffman worked to hard to create.

I was excited when I found out this book was real. I grew up watching the movie and I had fell in love with how in the MOVIE the sisters had an unbreakable bond and the aunts were they type of aunts I desperately wished I had growing up. Aunts who let the girls eat chocolate for breakfast, did magical spells in the kitchen, wore purple and made midnight margaritas. However, aunts in the book are very different from the film. They are much older and much creepier. The book doesn't really talk about a family curse that the Owens women are plagued with but as you read you find the sad truth of just how the "cruse" started and how it trickled down to Sally and Gillian.The book is almost the opposite from the film in every way. Sally and Gillian are sisters that lose their parents and are sent to live with their aunts who are the local witches in a very small and close-minded town. The aunts pretty much let the girls raise themselves which causes Sally to become the logical one who always had to think and calculate every step before she takes it and Gillian who throws caution to the wind and wears her heart of her sleeve. In the book, Sally is very resentful of her sister and at times hates her. The book is well written but tends to drift off in places. One moment you're reading about how difficult of a time Sally is having raising her teenage daughters and the next you're reading about the thoughts of a pizza delivery boy who makes a brief appearance in one paragraph.Sally loses her husband in a freak accident and then spends a year basically as a mute who ignores her daughters and responsibilities as a mother. Gillian marries many times and leaves her husbands heartbroken because the sparks has gone out for her and she finds herself in a bored. Hoffman describes the way the sisters fall in love with their "true loves" like being struck by lightning. When Gillian shows up at her sisters place - after having not seen each other for many years - with her dead boyfriend she is in desperate need of help. The book and film are two different types of stories. The movie leaves out so much and changes important plot points. The book in its own way is beautifully written and a very different type of love story. Not my usual cup of tea...but I defiantly would recommend it.

The Vampyr journal is perfect. The binding is tightly sewn and outside cover and inside illustrations are beautiful while the paper is high quality. I use the Pilot G2 gel pens and the ink does not bleed through to the other side of the paper. In most other journals I could not write on both sides because the ink would show on the other side, making it sloppy and hard to read. I loved this journal so much I bought a second one, one to use as a private journal and one for my story writing.

I love the show and this journal is an awesome companion. The cover mimics The Vampyr Slayer handbook. The inside has the first ten pages or so of condensed pages from the Slayer handbook with Buffy, GIles, Willow, and Xander's notes (comments) written near important parts.. Very realistic. It will be durable, too. I love writing and drawing in mine. The pages (192) are good quality and can hold up to many inks. I find that Sharpie Pens (not Sharpie Markers) will not bleed through. A great piece for any BTVS fan and an extra special piece for sketchbook and journal fans, like me.

I've been waiting for this for years. I'm an avid writer, I have lots of journals. Being a big Buffy fan, I had always said I wished they'd make a journal to look like the vampyr book Giles presents to Buffy in the pilot. Several years later, my wish came true. I love that it's hard cover and has some tidbits from the show in the first few pages. Definitely going to find a way to get it autographed by the cast and Joss.

This journal is very nice. It's quality was impressive for only $15. I loved the into and all the basic background information in the front of this journal. It also has small "written" in comments from characters in the Buffyverse which was a touch I super loved!I'll be using it to take notes during our Vampire: The Masquerade games but you could use it for anything.And it's definitely a must have for any Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan!

Bought this as a prop for my husbands Halloween costume, (We went as Buffy and Giles) but love it so much that I plan to use it as a journal as well. As far as prop-use, it's smaller than the book fro the show, but otherwise looks like the real deal and the handbook entries and footnotes are a fun read for BTVS fans.

I was really excited to find a book specifically written for weirdos like me who "read" maps and atlases like a book, love to navigate, and have a strange fascination with globes. Sadly though I couldn't make it past a few chapters of this book. Frankly, Ken Jennings, although a wiz at knowing every obscure worldly fact, is not a writer. The worst part is the hokey jokes inserted as a lame attempt to make this a lighthearted and fun read. The topics seem directionless and mostly sensational than insightful. I'm really disappointed I couldn't enjoy this read more. Maybe I'll skip ahead a few chapters and see if it can still maintain my attention. If so, I'll come back and update this review.Also, the paperback cover design has a hole in the shape of a cutout head, which makes it really uncomfortable to hold because it's right in the center where your fingers grip. Sounds silly but I actually think this matters a lot since you're going to be holding this book for hours.

Ever since I was a kid, I have enjoyed staring at maps and globes, and noticing all the weird shapes and place names and features. Ken Jennings apparently likes this sort of stuff even more than I did, and this book is a delightful celebration of not only a bunch of the specific things he has learned about, but of the whole phenomenon of map-loving.I bought the Kindle edition, and in case you're wondering (as I did) whether it would be a problem seeing the maps and other necessary illustrations in sufficient detail, rest assured that it's not a problem--at least not with a Kindle Fire device, which is what I was using.

The information provided in this book is interesting, but it's ruined by Ken Jennings constantly trying to make terrible puns throughout the book. I found myself sighing or rolling my eyes more often than I should have for a book like this

My son is a HUGE geography buff and he completely devoured this book. I wasn't sure there would be anything in there that he didn't already know, but there was plenty. And just reading a book about geography written by an author who also loves geography was a huge plus. When my son was done reading it, I read it and it helped me understand my son's obsession a little bit more. Thanks for that, Mr. Jennings!

This book started out with a bang. I was eager to read further to absorb all these interesting facts & ideas. Unfortunately, the reading became less & less compelling. Jennings is a talented, humorous & self-effacing writer though. I learned a lot from this book, not the least of which was a simple explanation of the "find the Pokémon characters" craze of a few years ago. Not sure why the author chooses to denigrate "old people". He'll be joining their ranks in a few short years.

This book is lots of fun. I have recommended them to all my friends. If you love maps, you'll enjoy this book. It's humorous, too.

Felt rambly to me, lots of rabbit holes and such. But overall broad overview of geography is great, multi-perspective approach works well.

Fun, quick read. Really enjoyed it. Would add to my Read Again shelf but many of the fun facts will likely be out of date in a few years. Read on a Kindle, I would have liked more photos & illustrations. Would make a great documentary. Cmon Travel Channel!

This is another paradigm-shaping book, like that of A New Heaven and a New Earth: Reclaiming Biblical Eschatology, by J. Richard Middleton (see my Amazon review of this same date). While both trace the same theme from Genesis to Revelation, their approaches and emphases are somewhat different, and I had the privilege of reading them both back to back. They definitely complement one another, and the topic of God's goal of a transformed and renewed creation as consummated in the New Heavens and New Earth is such a glorious and profound theme that I really couldn't satiate my hunger by reading just one book. Beale begins with the theme of Eden as God's Garden-temple in Genesis 1-2, and how Adam was placed in Eden with a priestly calling to work and keep the garden, subduing the animals and cultivating the earth, and expanding Eden. Instead they failed to guard the garden and were subdued by the serpent. They were in turn cast out. But God's plan for creation did not fail, rather his plan was carried on, eventually focused on Abraham and his sons, and on Moses. All during this time, the concept of a holy sanctuary where God dwells and meets with man is developed and expanded to the tabernacle and ultimately the temple. The temple imagery recurs throughout Scripture. As Israel fails and is taken into captivity, the promise remains alive through the prophets. Ultimately in the Gospels, Jesus is shown to be the true temple of God, and after his resurrection, the church (in Christ) is said to be a true temple, and its members have a priestly ministry. The temple and sacrificial imagery continues. With Jesus death and resurrection, we have the inauguration of the fulfillment of the promises of the prophets, carried on through the ministry of the church, until Christ's second coming. At that time, we see the final consummation of all things--the New Heavens and the New Earth, with the New Jerusalem descending from heaven to earth. And there we see again imagery from the temple, and from the original Garden-temple of Eden, and we see the features from Eden such as the river of life and the trees of life. But there is no physical temple there, for God and the Lamb are the temple, fulfilling what the earthly tabernacle/temple had pointed to and moved toward. As Beale says, "God's glorious presence in an Garden-like temple in Genesis 2 has formed an inclusio or book-end structure around the entire Canon (Gen 2 and Rev 21-22), thereby providing an interpretive key" to the whole Bible. This book will enrich your study and appreciation of the Bible, and cannot be recommended too highly. Instead of spending time worrying about a rapture, or 7-year tribulation, or an earthly millennium, could not our time be better spent focusing on what the Bible clearly focuses on and points to? That final and eternal glorious consummation of all things where God's dwelling place will be eternally with man, with sin eradicated forever?

An excellent book in the realm of Biblical Theology. It shows how Adam was actually the high priest of Eden charged with keeping it Holy. As the priests were charged, so we are charged today. The keeping of this charge includes the necessity for purity and holiness. The theme of the book is the parallels between the beginning of Genesis and the final chapters of Revelation.

EXCELLENT BOOK: THIS IS A MINI-VERSION OF G. K. BEALES LARGER "TEMPLE" BOOK.

This book got me to thinking of Jesus and the wider world as a temple. This would be excellent reading for any lay person in church, which is what I am. To see our mission on earth as expanding the temple of God (image bearers and )His Word to all the earth through witness and sacrifice of our bodies in a daily way is only done through the power of God's Word and prayer.

Beale is a fantastic author.He has helped me to understand the storyline of Scripture, in relation to God's presence dwelling amongst us, and how that has been manifested throughout time amongst the people of God.

This book has left me speechlessly overjoyed. I know of only one response and that is to bow in worship!!! I will be re reading this book time and time again to wrap my mind around it’s truth and flame the fire burning in my heart for the Lord!! You Most High! You alone are worthy of praise!!

As a result of reading this book, the Scriptures are exploding with deeper meaning for me. So thankful to have these insights in accessible format. (I can’t even lift Beale’s other massive works without help!)

Took me a couple of chapters to get in to this book. But now I'm loving it! Very interesting connections and overview on God's presence and the purpose of it.

This book is great. The print is large, there's enough room to write the solutions, and the paper is the kind you can erase on without destroying it.The puzzles are not real long and not real short, either. I would prefer at least some only a few words long but am not surprised there don't seem to be any. (This would be like the "expert section" in some puzzle magazines.) At least I haven't noticed any that are SO Very long either. I don't like those; they become tedious to me when it takes forever just to go through and change a couple of letters.. The ones in here seem to be a happy medium.The spiral binding is great, too. Overall a very good book.

I'm really enjoying this Cryptogram book. Even if you don't need large print, it gives you lots of space for writing above the cryptograms. It offers 652 challenges. Those in this book were originally published in three different books: "Hooked on Cryptograms", "Funnier Cryptograms", and "LOL Cryptograms." Even if you have already solved those in the original books, if you're like me, you'll still love this one.

In late April, I purchased this cryptogram book, “Large Print Cryptograms #2” to pass the time on a long overseas flight. When it arrived, I realized it was just too cumbersome to travel with. I decided to keep to solve at home and purchased “Hooked on Cryptograms” to take with me.I just started in on “Large Print Cryptograms #2” and can’t begin to tell you how aggravated I am to find that it contains a majority of the same quotes I already solved in “Hooked on Cryptograms”!With all the the clever things said by other dead people, I find this duplicitous reuse of quotes unconscionable. And given that one can’t even figure this by leafing through the pages, just compounds the deception and disregard by Puzzle Wright Press for their customers.Needless to say, I will not be purchasing another book by this publisher again.

I previously bought Hooked on Cryptograms by Henry Hook and really enjoyed it. I thought I would enjoy another book of his, but it turns out the content in this book duplicates a lot of the other book. I started at the beginning of this book, 17 out of the first 20 puzzles were in his previous book. I skipped to the 400s and found the puzzles there are new to me. I think each of the authors contributed part of the book, so if you're okay with part of the book being old material you should enjoy this one.

Some time ago I bought "Hooked on Crytograms" by Henry Hook. I keep it in the car for road trips. Then later I bought "Large Print Cryptograms #2" by Henry Hook, Shawn Kennedy, and Helen & David Nash. I soon discovered that the exact same puzzles appeared in both books,so I spent all that money to buy exactly what I already had except the book has a different title and cover. Big ripoff. They should have advertised this book as having the same content as the other book. I give this book a 2 because it is large print and easier to see.

This is my first cryptogram book by these authors so I have not experienced the duplication other readers have. Given the experience of others I will not purchase another book by them because it does appear they just keep repackaging the same old stuff. I couldn't ask for more in a puzzle book. Different length quotes, large print with plenty of space to write, spiral binding to lay flat, packed with 652 puzzles - what more can you ask for? Well, I have one gripe. Two hints are given for the first 210 puzzles and one hint for the remaining 442 puzzles. I fail to understand the rationale for that. If people want to cheat or get a hint, all they have to do is look at the puzzle answer given.

My 91 year old mother loves to work the cryptograms and the large print is easier on her eyes. We looked forward to Ms. Nash's new puzzle book and she certainly wasn't disappointed.

Bought this for my sister, she LOVES it! The large print is much easier or her eyes and the spiral binding makes doing the puzzles so much more comfortable. She likes this so much I have been looking for Cryptograms #1 by this author, to no avail.
