After nine years, the English translation finally comes out, and what a disappointment it is. I have this book in two other languages, and this version just takes way too many liberties that aren't true to the story or dialogue. Character dialogues are completely butchered and a lot of meaning behind a lot of scenes is lost. I'm frankly a little appalled that the writers are okay with this release.Fan translations have been better. Someone got paid to translate this, and poorly.I will be returning the book, as the translation quality is laughably bad.

Final Fantasy VII: On the Way to a Smile is a book of loosely connected episodic short stories that serve as epilogues to Final Fantasy VII, and prologues to Advent Children. On the Way to a Smile is a collection of short stories set in-between Final Fantasy VII and Advent Children (though the framing device for one of the stories takes place after Advent). Overall, there are seven stories in this collection, titled "Episode of X".The seven stories follow Denzel, Tifa, Barret, Yuffie, Nanaki, Shinra (Rufus and the Turks), and the Lifestream. Each story generally reads the same as each character tries to find their place in the new world they find themselves in. Only the Episode of Denzel and the Lifestream follow a different format. For Denzel, the prose switches between post-Advent and before-Advent scenes as Denzel tells Reeves his story as to how he came to be with Cloud and Tifa. Episode of the Lifestream, however, is told with a single page following each of the other stories, telling what Aerith and Sephiroth were doing in the Lifestream and how the Triplets were created as they switch from their perspectives.Overall, I found On the Way to a Smile to be okay. While it does explore unexplained aspects from Advent Children, like who Denzel is and how Rufus Shinra survived, but the repetition of the characters wondering what to do and striking out in the new world ground me down over time. It also doesn't help that the prose is just...serviceable. It's not bad, just needed some more punch.However, I did like how the stories connected with one another. For example, Denzel's story ends as he contacts Tifa. Then, during Tifa's story, we actually get to see the incident from Tifa's side. I also feel Denzel's story was the best among them.

What a great collection! The english version tries its best, and succeeds in capturing the nuances of its Japanese counterpart. All are written in third-person limited, with each "section" focusing on one character. The original Japanese author has also posted about this on their personal twitter and approved of said translations. It's a must have for all FF7 fans, a great collection of novellas set before the events of Advent Children. It also includes beautifully rendered character illustrations in the beginning. With such a cheap price, it's a fantastic deal!

This book is horrible. If you like errors and misinformation or can look past them then by all means go ahead and read this book.I couldn't get past the first chapter. (Spoilers)If anyone has seen Advent Children we know its 3 years after the fact of the original game. If you played Dirge of Cerberus it's 4 years after the original game. Also by that point WRO is a military organization. So why in episode Denzel it's 4 years after? It makes no sense and in the original book it's 3 years after even in the short film it's 3 years afterwards. Major editing error? Who knows. But with an major error like that I could read the rest other than episode Shinra and that was ok.

I pre-ordered this book after seeing their booth at New York Comic Con. The stories are unique to each character and keeps you wanting more. I would only recommend this to those that have completed the game and have seen Advent Children.

I guess? I haven't heard him say anything about reading it, but he did appear to enjoy receiving it.

I liked Tifa's story best for some reason but the book was good enough for me to finish which i hardly do with these types of books. I am a final fantasy fan though, of course. Sephiroth and Aeris (:D) part was forgettable

Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson4.5/5 starsI always forget how much I love mysteries! At first this book reminded me of a Westing Game with a Winchester Mansion twist.The plot alternates between the Ellingham family kidnappings in the 1930s and the present day Stevie Bell who attends Ellingham Academy intent on solving the mystery of the kidnappings.The book is full of riddles and puzzles, twists and turns. I found myself reading huge chunks at a time. There was some social commentary embedded within (mostly modern but one part was a clear JFK/LHO nod), but now I wonder if even some of that will be turned on its head. Despite murder and mischief, there was humor sprinkled throughout. The main thing I didn't like is that when I bought it I did not know it was part of a series (I knew right before starting) and that it ended on a literal "to be continued..." I don't have the best memory always and tend to mix up or forget things between books.If you like The Westing Game, Chasing Vermeer, or things like Winchester House you should like this one.

This was an excellent mystery whose only flaw was the cliffhanger ending. I want books two and three RIGHT NOW.Stevie Bell has been accepted at the Ellingham Academy in rural Vermont. The school was founded by a tycoon in the 1930s to provide a free education to students from a wide variety of backgrounds and with a wide variety of interests. Her housemates include and inventor, a novelist, an eccentric artist, an actor, and a character steeped in mystery. Stevie wants to solve mysteries and the one most on her mind is the kidnapping and disappearance of the school founder's wife and daughter in 1936. While the wife's body was found, the child's was not.Stevie has read all the books about the mystery. She has gathered thousands of pages of research including court transcripts, FBI interviews, and newspaper clippings. She is glad to be at the school and away from the parents who don't understand her and who support a political candidate she can't stand.The curriculum caters to her interests and she is kept busy with schoolwork and the day to day activities of a boarding school. Stevie is worried about the usual things: fitting in and making friends. Stevie also suffers from anxiety and takes medication to combat panic attacks. These things all fit in around her research.When Hayes, the actor, comes to her and asks for her help recreating the kidnapping, she pulls in Nate to do the writing while she provides the technical details. They gather together with other friends to produce a video. But then Hayes dies in one of the tunnels that riddle the school. Was it a tragic accident? Or is there a new murderer stalking Ellingham Academy?I loved the writing in this book. The story was descriptive, lyrical, and often sort of creepy. Stevie is a great character who sometimes gets so focused on crime solving that she neglects the people in her life. David was a fascinating character who provides quite a puzzle to Stevie even as they begin a tentative romance.Fans of mysteries, boarding schools, and romance will all enjoy this story and be eager to find out more when books two and three are available.

So. I have major beef with Maureen Johnson. I am a huge fan of her, and her writing, and her Shades of London series. I wait in anticipation for each and every new book to come out, and have been waiting year after year for the 4th in the series to be released, except it hasn't been and I don't even know if it ever will. I understand that she's been going through a lot, and of course, priority is herself and her health. My confusion lies in the fact that...well...she left that series unfinished and has now started writing a NEW series! Completely new series! And here's the other thing...it is very similar, in terms of plot and storyline, to the Shades of London series (boarding school, murder, mystery, group of kids trying to get the bad guy and solve a century old mystery?) (except we haven't encountered any ghosts...yet). So what does this mean for Shades of London? Is she done with that? I'd love if anyone who has or knows the answer would share it with me.Now...to get on with this book review. I am a sucker for YA mysteries, and I do love Johnson's writing style, so obviously I immediately purchased this book. The mystery in this one is quite heartbreaking, involving a 3 year old child, which tugs at my heartstrings. This is a very intricately written book, with so many complex things happening and being built simultaneously. Moving between past and present, you are left in awe at how Johnson maneuvered all the events and put them together in a way that isn't too complicated for the readers to grasp, but still leaves you scratching your head.The book starts with a prologue, where a student at Ellingham Academy is murdered. That scene is written so well that it made me think of The Lovely Bones and that suffocating scene where Susie gets brutally murdered. We then find out that the school's founder's wife and 3 year old daughter are also missing.In present day, Stevie Bell enrolls into Ellingham Academy with one goal in mind - to solve the murder mystery that took place back in 1936. Now, I have to admit, I was rolling my eyes at this. A teenager is going to solve a mystery that went unsolved for almost a century. Really? Except, once I got into it and got to know the characters and got to know Stevie better, I didn't even care anymore. I suspended reality and decided to go with the flow, and was completely behind her, supporting her and rooting for her.The book continues to alternate between past and present as the events of the past are slowly revealed and how the crime was never really solved and the child's body was never found, and how Stevie tries to put it all together in present time, while strange things start to happen mirroring the events of the past.In the midst of all that, we get to know Stevie's flat mates, friends, family, her likes and dislikes, her insecurities, her love interest (of course) and all the usual high school drama. David is definitely an intriguing character, and I have to admit, I didn't see that one coming, although I should have probably expected it, but I didn't.This whole book played out like a big set up for what's going to happen in book 2. It introduces you to the murder in the past, then sets you up with a new murder done in the same fashion as the one from the past with a poem by "Truly Devious" him/herself, then leaves you with, not one, but TWO killer cliffhangers so you basically have to bang your head against the wall in frustration as you wait until next year for the second installment.I hope that this is one series Maureen Johnson will see through to the end.

As you can read in the back of the book it is a selection of "essays, speeches, journalism, songs, poems, legal documents, testimonials and short stories"; yes, they are important and valuable to anyone interested in the country and it's people but if this is all you read about the country you will miss very important details about Dominican History.If you already know about Dominican History because you have studied, then by all means you should have this book in your collection. It is an interesting read and I recommend it. But if you don't know anything about the country history and want a good source, then this is not it.

This is #11 in the series and like the others is clever, imaginative and funny - assuming you have a sophomoric sense of humor like I do and remember the weirdness of middle school.I got hooked on these a long time ago and each book has gone on to be a best seller. Careful not to confuse them with the ones by James "I'll put my name on anything that makes money" Patterson since he was quick to jump on the concept. They also made a movie but I won't go that far!Issues he wrestles with include "attack geese" roaming the neighborhood, conning his folks into buying him a French horn so he can get himself invited to the band's Halloween party, and the creative genius required to put together a movie called"Night of the Nightcrawlers" inspired when he put a gummy worm up his nose to scare his buddy Rowley.Yeah, I know, I may grow old but I refuse to grow up! Everyone has a weakness or two ...

I am always a happy camper when ordering from Amazon! They never let me down. We pre-ordered the book during the Summer and it arrived the day of it's release. People don't notice the small stuff but I do. As I took the book out of the package I noticed the book has a smooth texture on the front cover. The book cover in general has a smooth grip- like texture, lol. I always love the smell of a new book but the smooth outside texture of the book adds a good feature to the book.The book has comic like pictures, but don't think it's a comic strip type book overall. It is a well worded book from the first page to the last page (217 pages overall) each page has a complete word filled page but the pictures adds to the imagination of the child reading this book. My son started reading this book series at 8. He's now 10 and he LOVES this book series so much he looks forward to the new books that come out and every once in a while re-reads the older book series. We even have family movie nights and I don't mind watching the couple movies that have been made from the "Diary of A Whimpy Kid" book series. I'm 32 and I find parts of the movie hillarious so I can only imagine reading this book as a kid. I can't say enough good things about this book or any other book from the series. If you're a parent like me, you'd rather watch your child read VS. Playing video games or watching TV programs. At least while reading it engages a child's imagination as well as improving their spelling. Some studies has shown that kids, especially those that are more visual learners, spelling improves the more they read. :)I will be on the lookout for more books by this same Author (Jeff Kinney). Don't hesitate to buy the book for your child (ren). I took a glimpse of a few pages already while my son is still at school and it's pretty funny! Ha ha ha. I posted some pictures for previewing. :-D

What can I say? Berger breaks the cycle of overly complicated thinking that has become a way of life for addicts (and allows us to hide from the truth of our addictions) into bite-size chunks. I highly recommend his books and the journey to keeping it real and uncluttered. No more excuses.

Great stuff, the chapter on confusing self concern with selfishness was eye opening. In AA the message I got early in sobriety was to be less selfish ie: " my problem was self will run riot" but I got confused because I felt I needed a lot of healing physically and mentally and I had no energy to be selfless. This chapter put it all in perspective as the other chapters ie: wrong information we can witness in AA and how to stay on track and be helpful to ourselves and others

When approaching the dilemna of addiction, there seem to be two interwoven necessities. The first, of course, is discontinuing the use of drugs, the other is re-evaluating the mindsets that led to the drug use. 12 Stupid Things That Mess Up Recovery follows very closely the 12 steps of NA or AA and explains in clear, concise terms what is the root mental outlook that each step is addressing. This is done with humor and frankness without being overly clinical or condescending. I found 12 Stupid Things That Mess Up Recovery to be illuminating and an easy read to boot.

Oh my gosh I couldn't put the book down. I'm not an addict but love someone that is. I just needed to understand what it is that might be holding him back from complete recovery. Instead I learned a few things about myself.

It has given me a lot of insight into my behavior and my feelings regarding my recovery. I have a lot of work to do. I am working the 12 steps again and I have found working solutions to a lot of my problems. This time, I am doing this for me and not because I have to, but because I want to.

Great book! I've been assigning it to my clients in treatment. It hits the important parts, the most common missing pieces for people who leave treatment and relapse.

This simply an outstanding book. I've had just a few ah ha moments and several duh! moments. Wouldn't want to go forward without it.

"The fundamental task of leaders... is to prime good feeling in those they lead. That occurs when a leader creates resonance a reservoir of positivity that unleashes the best in people. At its root, then, the primal job of leadership is emotional." So argue Goleman (Emotional Intelligence) and EI (emotional intelligence) experts Boyatzis and McKee. They use the word "primal" not only in its original sense, but also to stress that making employees feel good (i.e., inspired and empowered) is the job a leader should do first. To prove that the need to lead and to respond to leadership is innate, the authors cite numerous biological studies of how people learn and react to situations (e.g., an executive's use of innate self-awareness helps her to be open to criticism). And to demonstrate the importance of emotion to leadership, they note countless examples of different types of leaders in similar situations, and point out that the ones who get their employees emotionally engaged accomplish far more. Perhaps most intriguing is the brief appendix, where the authors compare the importance of IQ and EI in determining a leader's effectiveness. Their conclusion that EI is more important isn't surprising, but their reasoning is. Since one has to be fairly smart to be a senior manager, IQ among top managers doesn't vary widely. I feel a little as though the doctors (at least Goleman) are applying their emotional intelligence "brand" to leadership. However, there's a lot of common sense to it! I don't have a psychology degree and I know enough about organizational behavior to be dangerous, but, I've been leading in the military for more than 12 years and I'd like to think I know a little bit about the practical applications of leadership. The doctors present a lot of really relevant case studies to back up their recommendations and illustrate the principles in action. I give it 4 out of 5 stars because it's verbose. Their main arguments are clear because they repeat them many times. But the arguments are solid given their case studies and examples.

I bought and read this book for a college leadership class and I did find a lot of useful wisdom out of it.This book presents the challenge of leadership as a challenge to be a mentally/emotionally healthy person that ends up inspiring others towards that health as well.I gave it a 3 star because I feel the content of the book is great, but that the presentation of the material could have been better.It is not at all a difficult book to read and it makes very worthwhile points that if one takes seriously and attempts to apply to his own life, could indeed change everything. Self awareness, social awareness, self-management and relationship management encompass such a wide range of personal development, and they do cover a lot of very worthwhile material here. They present a lot of information in charts and make it easy to outline with take-away messages but there aren't a whole lot of super-clear action steps. For those who are in management, want to get better at it, but are stuck wondering how to get to the marvelous place that is described in this book here, it will be another book that gets read without any resulting change in behavior.It does cite some academic research and provides quite a bit of information about how brain-function works when it comes to these concepts, but does so in a way that the casual reader won't notice, but also that an academic reader that expects a great deal of citation will find inadequate.I applaud the fact that they are getting this kind of information out there, and if the reader does do the work of taking the example stories out of this book and truly imagining what can be possible if they achieve such awareness and do practice relating to others with this level of sincerity and care, then you couldn't help but be a fantastic leader of any organization, but there is little about this book that will shake you and make you do so.

This book is a landmark book espousing concepts that are very valuable for any kind of leader. Cultivating emotional intelligence not only in yourself, but in your organization, is a must in the world today. The authors do a good job of balancing theory with business principle. As the bulk of the theory is explained elsewhere, the book spends little time going deeply into what emotional intelligence looks like or what it is made up of. The core competencies of EI are only briefly listed in the appendix. It seems clear that the authors expect the reader to have read Goleman's prior work. I haven't, but I got a decent sense of what EI is all about. The book applies everything directly to the business world in a convincing way, although the stories that are told sometimes seem vague and almost invented for the book. Others go on for pages in long-winded detail, allowing the reader to choose whether to learn primarily through the concepts or through the stories. All in all, the concepts are really pretty self-evident, encouraging a leader to create harmony in relationships in order to increase effectiveness. While they are common sense principles, they seem to be rarely practiced. This makes the book endearing to me, knowing that I have here in my possession a quick reference with major points about leading effectively. The book has some detail on how to implement the strategies, but it could be a criticism of the book that it doesn't always go into much detail on process. The book is full of principles that an effective leader should be able to incorporate into an action plan, but the exact implementation is left entirely to the reader. I liked this book and plan to use it as a reference for leadership. It would be a good one to return to on a regular basis to review the principles within. It has enough information about increasing one's own capacity that it is a valuable regular read.

How many times can Goleman repackage "Emotional Intelligence". There is nothing really new in this book if you read the original work. If you did not, read this one instead as it leans more toward application than theory.
