Schoolteacher Randall was in such a rut he barely noticed it. He'd spent 10 years trying to teach French to unwilling British schoolboys. All his 30-something buddies were pairing off in respectable marriages, while his occasional girlfriends were becoming increasingly rare. Suddenly, after a slightly inebriated evening, he found himself involved in a bizarre mission: to fulfill the last wishes of an old man affiliated with his school, he agreed to go to the Solomon Islands and help organize a community project. Armed only with supreme ignorance-and a certain boredom with the life he'd been leading-Randall set off. In spite of his anxieties, he found everyone on the islands delightfully friendly, unhurried and unworried. Randall quickly relaxed into "Solomon Time," i.e., manana, whenever. His attempts to call a meeting to discuss what sort of self-help enterprise the islanders would like were ignored, so he decided they'd raise chickens, since no one else seemed to have thought of it. A capital idea-except they needed starter chicks. Randall treats readers to a picaresque adventure through the Solomons in search of elusive chicken dealers. This is a pleasant, vaguely humorous (though rarely laugh-out-loud funny) memoir from a British teacher in the Solomon Islands. The author, who portrays himself as a good-natured bumbler, stumbles into the opportunity to travel to a small island in this remote country and enact some scheme for the betterment of the islanders. Once there, he eventually stumbles on the idea of a chicken business; then follows a long but ultimately successful quest to obtain the necessary chickens. Meanwhile he enjoys the pace and beauty of island life and the company of both islanders and expats.And there’s not too much else to say about this one: it’s enjoyable, but not particularly insightful; we don’t learn too much either about the islands or the author. When Randall questioned the veracity of Arthur Grimble’s memoir of Pacific island life (which I also recently read), I started to wonder about Randall’s own honesty. A few episodes seem very neat, and really, who loses his footing and falls headlong into a bush or a pile of sacks every time he gives a speech? Once I could believe, but twice? Nevertheless, this is a nice lightweight read and helped fill in the Solomon Islands on my mental map. And it’s one of the few expat memoirs of the Pacific that made me a little jealous.

I read this book because I love travel writing, because I was a Peace Corps Volunteer (in Ghana, West Africa), and because I have been to the Solomon Islands.So when I read some of the descriptions of the book I became excited about Will Randall's "Solomon Time." Well, I was not too impressed. Not entirely disappointed either. It was refreshing to read conversations in pidgin English and read descriptions of Honiara and Munda (though I disagree that Honiara is a horrible place). What I was hoping for was more closure to the story and more lessons learned as a volunteer. It sounds like Will had a good experience with his chicken project and the follow up restaurant, but what became of these ventures? I, for one, don't remember Chicken Willie's in Munda when I was there in 2009, but perhaps I missed it. I don't know how I could have, but perhaps...Some of the descriptions are quite contrived, too. I love a good descriptive travel narrative, and if your job is to describe the Solomon Islands, you'd better be ready. It is a brilliant place with more colors than anywhere else in the world. His description of the chicken crowing and the sun coming up like a big fiery disc... blah blah blah... was just not up to par with how other travel writers could have dealt with it. I'm a fan of Theroux and Bryson, so perhaps I was expecting too much.The book also reads like a choppy set of chapters all thrown together with little links between them. There is a story, but it runs as an undercurrent to different self-contained chapters. I found this to be a little annoying, especially considering the fact that the main story doesn't really conclude itself. Okay, the project becomes something of a success, but then what?An unlikely quest? Yes. I just wish it was a more vivid quest with a few good lessons learned.Hem alright lelebit.

Read AFTER our 8-day Solomon Islands cruise on the MV Bilikiki in 2014, it was a great reminder -- and, oh so true.A must for Solomon Island explorers -- my 2nd time. The first included Rendova as a crewman on the PT-103 in 1943. Things are calmer now.

Most interesting book. It kept me reading and not wanting to put it down. Was like I was experiencing what the author was experiencing.. You would never believe this book could be so well written and with humor too. I would recommend it to everyone. Conveys the message that we should slow down, smell the roses, appreciate what we have. Maybe we should live a little on Solomon Time too!

As an american i found the book to be very intresting not only for the relaxing journey though the south pacific but also for Randall's british ways, Reading solomon time made me think of Will as Hugh Grant. The conversations with the islanders were very good , the desciptions of the island scenery and people was great and i feel like i came away knowing a remote village in a far flung corner of the map, which is always an indication of a good book.

First of all if you are going to be anit-american, and he is, and then lie about americans in your story, at least get your stereotypes correct. Americans, in particular Texans, of whom he is demonizing, don't talk like Australians. His three comic book villains, vile American's, are given a manner of speech found only in Australia or the U.K. We do not say mate, bloke, reckon, y'reckon, a bit of a feed, or pardner. While some do wear cowboy hats and big buckles, they generally do not wear these outside of a ranch or rodeo setting.The author seems to bumble his way about, to magically hit upon a very complex restaurant scheme in the end. Which if you follow his way of writing and references to himself, he could never come up with on his own. Seems as though he was patently handed this scheme and passed it off as his own over a difficult quest.He throws in regular clichés into his story, that no one would fall for more than once. As far as his restaurant goes, I was there around the same time and saw nothing of the famous "chicken willey's", perhaps I just didn't go far enough in Honoria to see it, or maybe it just didn't last that long. Then again, if memory serves, wasn't much to that town to begin with. He also seems to skip any mention of past military landmarks and ruins on Honoria itself, though does mention it on another island. How you can miss the tanks and leftover WWII detritus and memorials around Honoria is beyond me.Over all skip it. It is a fanciful tale and nothing more, not what its made out to be.

The book shows a publisher's date of 1998, so it pre-dates the rise of social media and Orwellian control of our means of communication. Mamet is 10-15 years ahead in his analysis of media, feminism, men and women, and the future of television and cinema. For this reason, I suggest buyers file this book in the reference section of their library. I bought it first in 2000, gifted numerous copies to friends, and pulled it out again just yesterday for a 4th read. It resonates stronger today than when Mamet penned his words. Perhaps this is why reviewers of this book are somewhat less than enthusiastic. Were they to re-read it today, their star rating would rise. Yes, Mamet can get hung up on the flies in the ointment, but he also foretells well in advance of the general public. A keeper.

This book's unfulfilled promise hung in the back of my mind until I finally reread it and realized that my previous review was a comment on my own mental state at the time, not on the book itself.When read as a series of loosely connected monologues regarding the philosophy and art of storytelling this is as good as all the other 5-star reviews say it is. Short but deep; not superficial, must be read as much emotionally as logically.Original confused review:I don't remember where I read this book praised so very highly that I bought it that day, so I don't remember the context. I found it meandering to the point it was almost incomprehensible. Perhaps I'm just not privy to Mr. Mamet's particular sort of genius, but I found little to benefit my writing life.

You will find no better explication of drama. Period. Mamet is a genius with words and emotions. This treatise is as valuable for a novelist or a storyteller as it is for a screenwriter or playwright. Absolutely astounding.

Mamet is known as a pioneer of the theatre. He was one of the first to use pure dialogue as action, thus begat Tarantino and a million other "gritty" talk-fests. But here, Mamet writes three essays about WHY we like to watch. He analyzes the human nature of wanting to view drama: be it Hamlet, the weather, or a close football game. They all captivate us. But why? Like the writings of Peter Brook, or Stanislavski, each reading bears new fruit. Some of it will pull the rug out from under the "hero-worshipping" theatre crowd. Some will give a sigh of relief. All of it is revealing.

I think that this book follows Mamet's M.O. to a tee - It is very erudite, yet I find myself laughing. His writing is very thought provoking in this essay on using your writing to convey meaning. It is not his best book, but it is certainly worthy of the 1 hour it takes to read.I think this book, as other Mamet books, benefits by his ironclad belief that there is one way to do things. He may actually argue that his POV is not consistent with my last sentence, but he is such an ornery S.O.B., that it is simply a pleasure to listen to him go off on his tirades and tangents.Will this book allow you to write better? - Maybe. Will this book thoroughly entertain you and enlighten you with Mamet's POV on the issue? - Absolutely. It reads almost like fiction.

After I was done reading it I realized I had highlighted about 50% of the book’s text, we’ll just leave it at that.

A thought-provoking book. Mamet cuts through the drivel of television news and skewers the "information age." Along the way he sheds light on how a story teller, dramatist, playwright or novelist can construct a meaningful drama.

Let me just say that I do not speak Spaniush fluently, although I did read the spanish versions alongside the translations. I can understand why many have stated that Dario was Latin America's greatest poet, whether true or not I can't say. I must confess that I am not drawn to this style of poerty. It comes across as period works with bountiful Greek and Roman mythological references and endless symbolism that to my twenty first century mind leave me a bit wanting. There were several poems that did give me some insight into Dario and impressed me with their originality.

I found this book to be very insightful into the mind of Ruben Dario. Having the translation in both languages gives the reader an accurate idea of what Dario wanted to express; and also gives the reader an accurate idea of why he chose certain words to say certain things. Some small detail I would have wished is that it contained the full lirical calendar, the autum, winter, spring, and fall poems. Overall, an exellent book.

You simply can't go wrong with this series. Here is one of the great names in Spanish literature, Rubén Darío, made even more accessible through the dual-language format. A must for teachers, students, and those of us will always be both!

The Kindle version is not organized. You can't navigate easily because nothing is where it should be. Don't waste your money!

It's extremely difficult to read the Kindle version. At the middle of each poem, it switches to a different poem in a different language. There's no chronological order. Don't waste your money.

This book has the works of Rubén Dario in Spanish, followed by the English translation. I bought it for one poem in particular that we are using for a phonetics course. I have to record the poem in Spanish to show how I have applied the phonetics throughout the semester. I thought that the translation would help me emphasize the important points. I also got very interested in the author's other works. I am a Spanish major.The translation of the poem Sonatina is fantastic and the best I found. I loved it. I had tried to translate it myself, but something seemed missing and didn't make sense.I gave this review 4 stars instead of 5, because of usage on the kindle app, which does not allow me to put the translation page next to the English. This is compounded by the fact that this poem is over one page long. It means that the layout goes like this:the poem, Sonatina in Spanish (minus the last 2 stanzas) is on one pagethe poem Sonatina translated into English is on the next page, (you can't compare side to side as is the books intention)the 3rd page is a different poem in Spanish. On the bottom of that page is the end of Sonatina in Spanishthe 4th page is the English translation of the different poem. On the bottom of that page is the end of Sonatina in English.I requested a refund and have been given it. I really appreciate the quick manner it was given and I use Amazon more than any other online book store. I trust and use them a lot. I am by no means an authority on literature in any language and I have only studied literature within other cultural courses, not a survey of the history and meaning of it all. This is just my honest reaction. Rubén Dario lived from 1868-1916 and began a new literary movement, "moderismo" (moderism) according to several internet sources. I would encourage anyone interested in Spanish literature or poems to go to the "Look Inside" area of this book (for paperback edition) and read about this author's work. See if you like this type of poetry and literature or want to learn more about it. Reason two is that if you want to buy a "side by side" book with a foreign language on the left and English on the right, a paperback or hardcover is best. I had thought that kindle allowed 2 pages to be viewed side by side, but I guess I was remembering PDF files instead. My other Spanish books on kindle had translations in separate books so I bought one hard cover book of one to go with the kindle edition of the other. Reason 3: I wanted to comment on kindle in general: I love that I can store many books on my kindle for mac. This is good for travel or just not needing to take a ton of books with me (or at least a lot less paper copies). I still buy paper copies of some books, but try to buy them in kindle when I can so that there is more space in my house. I own a lot of books and space is an issue. I have found that non-fiction books are not always so good to buy for use on kindle for mac. The reason is that the page numbering is not the same as the paper copies and it is hard to stay oriented when the book's author, for example, refers you to a certain page. I hope that in the future these issues will be resolved on kindle for mac. I am not sure if the actual kindle products are different from the kindle apps for computers as far as these issues go. I will have to investigate.

I love Kate Morton's previous novels and didn't want them to end. So when this one came out, I began reading it as soon as I could. But I am not enjoying it like I should, like I did the others. I am so lost and so disappointed. I get who Elodie is and her set of characters, and Edward and most of his set of characters, but who the heck is Leonard and Jack? And somebody new I ran into last night, they just sort of appear out of nowhere and I don't know who, where or when they are. I need somebody who understands this book, if there is someone like that, or the author herself nearby to answer my questions! Maybe I just need to start over and take notes, if that will help, or just give up. Maybe a reader's guide to each chapter. Gosh, reading one of my favorite authors shouldn't be this hard!

I'm 62% into the book. I'm making myself finish it. So disappointed after waiting anxiously for it to be released. Too many pieces and nothing is coming together. It's even boring at times. Not the Kate Morton masterpiece i was expecting. What happened.Kate?

I'm more than halfway through and sadly, I just can't bring myself to finish. Too many characters whose storylines are long that by the time she gets back to them, I've forgotten their background. I can easily read a book that switches time periods but I was just...lost. Huge KM fan. Compared to her previous novels, this one is forgettable. I read for relaxation, not to be frustrated.

Ever since I read The Lake House, which I loved, I have been meaning to read another one of Kate Morton's books. The Clockmaker's Daughter, her latest book, does not disappoint. It's told primarily from the viewpoint of Elodie, a woman in the present day who discovers a leather satchel containing a mysterious photograph and sketchbook, and from a group of artists in the mid-1800s, who were spending a summer at Birchwood Manor, an English countryside house with a long history. There are other characters from different points in time that weigh in as well, helping to build the narrative.Morton is especially skilled at building these types of historical stories, that are part mysteries, part historical fiction,and part love story. The pacing is almost perfect - just enough information is given that the story keeps on building and the reader is engaged, but nothing is ever revealed too early or too quickly. In fact, I didn't realize what would happen at the end of the book until the precise moment when Morton hinted at it in the last pages. Additionally, the setting is wonderful, and I could really feel myself at the Manor both in historical times and in the present day. There are little historical details woven throughout the book that really help build the setting. Furthermore, the character development is fantastic - I really felt like I knew Elodie, the artists, and others.One thing to note is that these types of stories take awhile to build, so an impatient reader may begin almost immediately wondering when s/he will get to the "meat" of the story. That's not to say that the book is slow-moving or wastes words - quite the opposite, and the reader is immediately presented with the mystery - but it may take a few chapters until you are invested enough in the story to get to the point where you don't want to put the book down. Also, resist any urges to peek ahead, as I did this, and definitely spoiled a chapter for myself.All in all, I can't recommend this book highly enough, and now I definitely want to read all of Morton's previous books while I wait for her next one to come out!

It was a sad ending and no ending at all for most of the entwined stories. I am so disappointed, it was just incomplete. I loved her books at first but the last one I read I was a little disappointed in, but this one, don't even bother unless you can read it for free. Even then, be prepared to be left filled with unanswered questions. :'(

Kate Morton is one of my favorite contemporary writers (I even had the chance to meet her two-and-a-half years ago at a book signing for _The Lake House_ at a local bookstore, and couldn't resist including the photo here!), and this new novel -- her sixth -- is another one of her gems. If you love novels where the impact of the past is felt on the present, you'll love this one.As with Morton's previous novels, _The Clockmaker's Daughter_ juxtaposes the past and present by telling the narrative through the use of multiple voices. The primary action in the past involves a group of artists (almost reminiscent of the Pre-Raphaelites in terms of their lifestyle) living in 1862, and the primary action in the present day involves an archivist named Elodie Winslow, whose discovery of a mysterious photo and journal/sketchbook lead her to seek out the story behind them. As you read more deeply, you also learn about the titular character, and her role in all of the events that have taken place. (I don't want to include any spoilers, so am purposely leaving my synopsis a bit vague.)Morton is especially adept at using similar themes in new ways, so here you'll find a mysterious manor house; a narrative, as mentioned, that moves between time periods (here, between the Victorian period and 2017); and secrets waiting to be unlocked. The way in which Morton works her craft, though, makes each of her novels unique, and this one is no exception.Her prose, as always, is also luminescent, and the way that Morton describes the small details of Elodie's life in particular is just beautiful. In several places, it reminded me of the writing of Virginia Woolf and Katherine Mansfield; there are also quite a few places where Morton's use of free indirect discourse flows into a stream-of-consciousness style. Morton also seems to have taken more risks in her writing than she has in her prior novels. Early on, for instance, there is a small section where the point of view is that of a satchel waiting to be opened, and the use of personification here feels fresh and new.Morton's novels are long, but the pacing is always perfect -- as it is in this new one -- and I devoured this novel in just a few days. As the mysteries surrounding the characters unfolded and the interspersed narratives pulled me in, I couldn't stop reading, and was up way past my bedtime a few nights because I couldn't put this down. (Who needs sleep, though, when you have good coffee??!) I definitely recommend Morton's newest novel. The only problem is that it'll be a few more years until her next one is out. :-)Happy reading!

Eat healthily and enjoy life, 3. Trading is easy, 4. Actually trading is hard and 90% of people fail at it, 5. Don't trade to make money but trade to be a good person, 6. Be truthful to yourself (what?)The 'book' is lazy, typo ridden (on every other page) and far from insightful. Moreover, the author spends 10% of the 'book' trying to sell you his online courses, culminating in him asking for good reviews on amazon.com!! (Which perhaps is why there are so many 5 stars - I'm baffled)

Scam. Book is the size of a pamphlet with constant repeated information. Stay away.

Useless, just like his course he is trying to make money of.

This is the second book I've read from this author and both were well written, brief and concise - my kind of read. He has a knack for making the complex understandable and offers a lot of tips and details on what your getting into. You may also want to check-out his YouTube videos, same kind of deal. I'll be ordering his other books.

My takeaway from Matt Kratter's book is: making money trading is simple, but it is not easy! There are rules and discipline and the market is not a benevolent being. It will call you out if you stray.The chapter on trading psychology is extremely important. My reading has focused here in the last several months. Even if the rules and discipline are in place, you'll suffer as a trader if your mindset is not aligned. My trading has drastically improved since I brought my mindset aboard.I see this new book as a package, together with his other books, not for beginners, but for those who have really put in the time and effort to learn and improve their trading performance. I have read hundreds of books on trading and always turn back to reread Matt Kratter's for the clarity and simplicity of individual aspects of trading.This new book spurs me to reflect on my journey in putting all the pieces together and points out a few more places where I can put my effort to become truly successful at trading.

Overall i enjoyed this book. It is very short, but that means that I can re-read it periodically whenever I am feeling discouraged about a bad streak. For experienced traders there will now be a ton of new information, but for the rookie trader willing to learn, it has some pearls of wisdom. The only real critique I would have is that some of the information is a bit simplistic, such as the advice to trade to become a better person. I agree that money should not be your only motivation to trade, but I would argue that character development is only one side of the equation. Overall, a great read and a great value!

I don’t write many reviews, but I believe this books deserves 5 stars. I’ve read many books over the years and I have my own believes. I read new books just for knowledge. This books condensed all the right things and is to the point. After my years of experience if I had to recommend on how to trade it would be everything in this book.

I have several of Matthew Kratter's books (some freebies, some paid) and I absolutely LOVE the fact that I can read one of his books in a short time and feel like I know what to do - just a bit of practice is needed. He gives me what I nee to know without all the fluff in most other books.This book, while not as focused as his others, demonstrates that Matthew has "been there" and "done that". Since I started reading his books (and some others, too), I have been increasingly successful at trading.. Coincidence?. I doubt it... Thank you, Matthew, for sharing your experience with the rest of us in such an affordable way... Solid gold...

I am a college professor who teaches teachers. I am also an avid baseball fan with no more than a B average when it comes to sabermetrics. I try to get teachers to integrate baseball concepts into classrooms as a vehicle to teach their required curricula. This book is now required reading for its broad appeal regarding math, economics, problem-solving, logic and of course, snarky writing. The two sections are easy enough for newbies but still good refreshers for people like me who read books & blogs but not religiously. Part Three taps into Mr. Law's ideas about where baseball is headed with scouting & data, with front-office insights from baseball business people. Do yourself a favor and get this book. Buy a copy for that friend that talks baseball & goes to the games with you. It will add to your enjoyment & knowledge of the game - what more can you ask from a book!

As someone who worked in the industry (baseball analytics) in the past, I can't overstate how crucial this book is to understanding the state of play in baseball analytics. It's a clear, careful, and logical examination of how bad statistic lead to decisions, how the SABRmetric revolution matured to the point where it's now a part of baseball's establishment, and what the exciting Next Big Thing in analytics will look like. Law's a terrific writer who can communicate math-y concepts clearly and with a surprisingly amount of humor. I doubt that this book will be over any reader's head, and it easily could have been.Some folks seem to be disappointed that this book is not something it never set out to be: A new system for parsing existing statistics to more exactly rate who's good and who isn't. This is a book about how gleaning insight from statistics has gone from alchemy to a science to, well, something that's frankly incredible.

As someone who has read Keith Law for years (both on ESPN and his personal blog), I'm biased when I give this a 5 star review. I agree with his approach and analysis of the stats used in baseball circles for years and that the modern analytical tools give the game more depth and a truer picture of how the players perform. His take on stats such as RBI and Saves indicate how player analysis has been skewed for generations and how the ill conceived stats have shaped the game. For those new to his work, you may be surprised as some old ideals are pealed away and will learn of some new stats that are starting to be used with increasing regularity. But for me the highlight as usual with Keith Law is the wry sense of humor. I laughed for five minutes at a Salomon Torres joke that most will likely shrug by. Smart Baseball is a good look at how the perceptions the game are changing today and a peak into where the game is headed analytically.

It's a solid enough read but I'd say it's almost surelyonly for a serious or moderately serious baseball fan with a baseline knowledge of the game. It's also repetitive at times as there were exact sentences that showed up at various points in the book. On the other end of the spectrum if you are highly familiar with advanced stats and the like, I don't think you will get a ton of new insight. All that being said it's still an enjoyable read for the serious fan or a less serious one that wants to learn new things.

A great primer for the 'new' stats that add greater numerical description to the performance of a baseball player and team. Wonderful discussions around the old standbys (BA, ERA, etc.) and a quick look at new tools for performance analysis. A pleasant read for this retired math educator.

There are two things that are perfectly clear when you read "Smart Baseball": Keith Law knows statistics and he knows baseball. The book is perfectly organized -- here are all the old stats that you know and love (batting average, RBIs, pitcher wins, etc.) and why they're stupid (at worst) or misleading (at best). Having led you to that point, he introduces statistics that actually tell us something about players (WAR, OBP, OPS, etc.) and how they are constructed. All of this is done in a perfectly accessible way, whether you have a strong background in statistics or not. It reads quickly, but you never feel like something important is being glossed over.When Law starts talking about Statcast, the book slows down a bit. It's still good material, but almost feels "tacked on" to the rest of the book.The only bad thing is that once you've finished, watching games on TV with all the old statistics gets a little frustrating.

I'm an avid fan of baseball, and particularly baseball from a sabermetric angle. This book challenged me to think about the game in new and different ways, and the author did a superb job of explaining some of the current concepts in the game (such as ways to analyze defense) in an easily accessible manner.I can't recommend it enough for anyone interested in reading about how today's game isn't like the game we grew up with, and how that's a good thing.

I've been following Keith Law since he wrote for Baseball Prospectus. I pay for ESPN Insider mostly to read Keith's current work. This book does not disappoint. Keith has always had a nice, clean way of presenting often complex information and it comes to the fore in Smart Baseball. His experience as a scout, analyst and writer makes him the top baseball pundit currently working and this book is excellent reading for someone interested in how baseball has changed and how a layman can understand the new inner workings of the game.
