A paper-thin 'book' with large font that could be reduced to perhaps 5 pages of stock tips and tangential self-help. Much of the contents are suggestions such as 1. Don't trade when you're upset, 2. Eat healthily and enjoy life, 3. Trading is easy, 4. Actually trading is hard and 90% of people fail at it, 5. Don't trade to make money but trade to be a good person, 6. Be truthful to yourself (what?)The 'book' is lazy, typo ridden (on every other page) and far from insightful. Moreover, the author spends 10% of the 'book' trying to sell you his online courses, culminating in him asking for good reviews on amazon.com!! (Which perhaps is why there are so many 5 stars - I'm baffled)

Scam. Book is the size of a pamphlet with constant repeated information. Stay away.

Useless, just like his course he is trying to make money of.

This is the second book I've read from this author and both were well written, brief and concise - my kind of read. He has a knack for making the complex understandable and offers a lot of tips and details on what your getting into. You may also want to check-out his YouTube videos, same kind of deal. I'll be ordering his other books.

My takeaway from Matt Kratter's book is: making money trading is simple, but it is not easy! There are rules and discipline and the market is not a benevolent being. It will call you out if you stray.The chapter on trading psychology is extremely important. My reading has focused here in the last several months. Even if the rules and discipline are in place, you'll suffer as a trader if your mindset is not aligned. My trading has drastically improved since I brought my mindset aboard.I see this new book as a package, together with his other books, not for beginners, but for those who have really put in the time and effort to learn and improve their trading performance. I have read hundreds of books on trading and always turn back to reread Matt Kratter's for the clarity and simplicity of individual aspects of trading.This new book spurs me to reflect on my journey in putting all the pieces together and points out a few more places where I can put my effort to become truly successful at trading.

Overall i enjoyed this book. It is very short, but that means that I can re-read it periodically whenever I am feeling discouraged about a bad streak. For experienced traders there will now be a ton of new information, but for the rookie trader willing to learn, it has some pearls of wisdom. The only real critique I would have is that some of the information is a bit simplistic, such as the advice to trade to become a better person. I agree that money should not be your only motivation to trade, but I would argue that character development is only one side of the equation. Overall, a great read and a great value!

I don’t write many reviews, but I believe this books deserves 5 stars. I’ve read many books over the years and I have my own believes. I read new books just for knowledge. This books condensed all the right things and is to the point. After my years of experience if I had to recommend on how to trade it would be everything in this book.

I have several of Matthew Kratter's books (some freebies, some paid) and I absolutely LOVE the fact that I can read one of his books in a short time and feel like I know what to do - just a bit of practice is needed. He gives me what I nee to know without all the fluff in most other books.This book, while not as focused as his others, demonstrates that Matthew has "been there" and "done that". Since I started reading his books (and some others, too), I have been increasingly successful at trading.. Coincidence?. I doubt it... Thank you, Matthew, for sharing your experience with the rest of us in such an affordable way... Solid gold...

I am a college professor who teaches teachers. I am also an avid baseball fan with no more than a B average when it comes to sabermetrics. I try to get teachers to integrate baseball concepts into classrooms as a vehicle to teach their required curricula. This book is now required reading for its broad appeal regarding math, economics, problem-solving, logic and of course, snarky writing. The two sections are easy enough for newbies but still good refreshers for people like me who read books & blogs but not religiously. Part Three taps into Mr. Law's ideas about where baseball is headed with scouting & data, with front-office insights from baseball business people. Do yourself a favor and get this book. Buy a copy for that friend that talks baseball & goes to the games with you. It will add to your enjoyment & knowledge of the game - what more can you ask from a book!

As someone who worked in the industry (baseball analytics) in the past, I can't overstate how crucial this book is to understanding the state of play in baseball analytics. It's a clear, careful, and logical examination of how bad statistic lead to decisions, how the SABRmetric revolution matured to the point where it's now a part of baseball's establishment, and what the exciting Next Big Thing in analytics will look like. Law's a terrific writer who can communicate math-y concepts clearly and with a surprisingly amount of humor. I doubt that this book will be over any reader's head, and it easily could have been.Some folks seem to be disappointed that this book is not something it never set out to be: A new system for parsing existing statistics to more exactly rate who's good and who isn't. This is a book about how gleaning insight from statistics has gone from alchemy to a science to, well, something that's frankly incredible.

As someone who has read Keith Law for years (both on ESPN and his personal blog), I'm biased when I give this a 5 star review. I agree with his approach and analysis of the stats used in baseball circles for years and that the modern analytical tools give the game more depth and a truer picture of how the players perform. His take on stats such as RBI and Saves indicate how player analysis has been skewed for generations and how the ill conceived stats have shaped the game. For those new to his work, you may be surprised as some old ideals are pealed away and will learn of some new stats that are starting to be used with increasing regularity. But for me the highlight as usual with Keith Law is the wry sense of humor. I laughed for five minutes at a Salomon Torres joke that most will likely shrug by. Smart Baseball is a good look at how the perceptions the game are changing today and a peak into where the game is headed analytically.

It's a solid enough read but I'd say it's almost surelyonly for a serious or moderately serious baseball fan with a baseline knowledge of the game. It's also repetitive at times as there were exact sentences that showed up at various points in the book. On the other end of the spectrum if you are highly familiar with advanced stats and the like, I don't think you will get a ton of new insight. All that being said it's still an enjoyable read for the serious fan or a less serious one that wants to learn new things.

A great primer for the 'new' stats that add greater numerical description to the performance of a baseball player and team. Wonderful discussions around the old standbys (BA, ERA, etc.) and a quick look at new tools for performance analysis. A pleasant read for this retired math educator.

There are two things that are perfectly clear when you read "Smart Baseball": Keith Law knows statistics and he knows baseball. The book is perfectly organized -- here are all the old stats that you know and love (batting average, RBIs, pitcher wins, etc.) and why they're stupid (at worst) or misleading (at best). Having led you to that point, he introduces statistics that actually tell us something about players (WAR, OBP, OPS, etc.) and how they are constructed. All of this is done in a perfectly accessible way, whether you have a strong background in statistics or not. It reads quickly, but you never feel like something important is being glossed over.When Law starts talking about Statcast, the book slows down a bit. It's still good material, but almost feels "tacked on" to the rest of the book.The only bad thing is that once you've finished, watching games on TV with all the old statistics gets a little frustrating.

I'm an avid fan of baseball, and particularly baseball from a sabermetric angle. This book challenged me to think about the game in new and different ways, and the author did a superb job of explaining some of the current concepts in the game (such as ways to analyze defense) in an easily accessible manner.I can't recommend it enough for anyone interested in reading about how today's game isn't like the game we grew up with, and how that's a good thing.

I've been following Keith Law since he wrote for Baseball Prospectus. I pay for ESPN Insider mostly to read Keith's current work. This book does not disappoint. Keith has always had a nice, clean way of presenting often complex information and it comes to the fore in Smart Baseball. His experience as a scout, analyst and writer makes him the top baseball pundit currently working and this book is excellent reading for someone interested in how baseball has changed and how a layman can understand the new inner workings of the game.

This book has chapters on the Holy Mysteries of Holy Eucharist, Baptism, Chrismation, Confession, Anointing of the Sick, Marriage and Ordination, but it's primary focus is that we come to the Divine Liturgy not to be informed or entertained, but to worship God. When we attend Divine Liturgy it is to "lay aside all earthly care: that we may receive the King of all". Again and again this book states, "Orthodoxy is nothing less than a relationship with God." "We do not go to church to understand. Rather, we go to church to meet God..." "We can only meet God in the present moment....We choose whether or not to live in the present moment...We can only make decisions in the present moment. We can only enjoy sights and sounds in the present moment. We can only love or hate in the present moment...Of all the possible points in time, only the present moment is available for repentance. The past cannot be taken back and remade. The future remains forever outside our reach...One of the important functions of prayer is to bring us into, and to assist us to remain in, the present." The purpose of the Orthodox Church is one of joyful worship.

After the first couple chapters of Bread & Water, Wine & Oil by Archimandrite Meletios Webber--Fr. Mel to those he pastors--you are not quite sure if you are in an Esalen yoga retreat class or a Marin County spirituality workshop in the 70s. Yes, this is definitely a "get out of your head and into your heart" kind of book. At the same time it makes for classical eastern Orthodox scholarship. Though a down to earth book, those I feel will be attracted to this work are the rather heady, bookish sort. If so, this volume will serve as good medicine for the right folk.Webber starts out letting us know that the West got lost pretty much at the trailhead in matters of the head and heart. He translates nous as heart and not mind. He points us to a Philokalia directive of St. Markarios that the nous is indeed the "eye of the heart"; and of St. Diadochos (5th Cent.) that it is this nous business which is a key anchor point of our lives if our spirituality is to work--"innermost aspect of the heart". Here we plug into and stay connected to our true selves and into each other, how we best commune and communicate with self, our fellows and with God. Webber addresses well the disintegration, fragmentation and estrangement that plagues us and our often limping religiosity.His call for us to return to the heart and to experience and to mystery is accompanied by a parallel warning. Danger ahead is the bodiless mind embracing and theologically fatal path of dualism (body bad; spirit good) endemic in the West. The tone of Webber's book is refreshing, like the way he suggests that perhaps calling our bishop "your eminence" might be a bit dated.If you are an academic, you might be offended at his style as Webber works to keep things simple. He tells fun stories yet he is far from an Erma Bombeck protégé. Those under the author's tutelage will tell you he's a man of letters. He retired (in a ceremony hosted by Kallistos Ware, his mentor) in recent years as a parish priest to write. Yet God yanked him back into the pastorate to serve as head of a dozen or so monks at St. John's Monastery near Redding where he leads a group of rather bookish monks previously lead by the new Metropolitan of the OCA. Hopefully Achmandrite Webber's contemplative digs of late will yield many more such helpful books. Fr. Melitos has a Greek background yet as a Celtic redhead convert to the Eastern church he has a British humor and an Oxford head on his shoulders which brings a good mix that comes together well in his writing.I liked this book better than the one on sobriety and the 12 steps. In both Webber is at the same time simple and complex. This book on the Sacraments soulfully explores the mystical theology of the Eastern church. Not surprising as I'm told the predecessor and founder of the monastery Fr. Meletios now shepherds came to the East through Lossky 's book by that same title. This is good. I look for many other helpful titles from this Orthodox author.

This book is a very good introduction to the Orthodox Christian experience of God. It is divided into two parts: the first is entitled, "Life as Mystery," while the second is called "The Mysteries of the Church." In my opinion, the first part makes this read worth your time, and chapters one and two alone are worth the purchase price of the book! The author's psychological training is very evident during his discussion of "The Mind, the Heart & Mystery," and his elaboration upon the difference between the functions of the mind and the heart opened my eyes on the topic like no other theological text. The portion of the book dealing with the mysteries of the Church is, quite frankly, less distinctive than the author's treatment of "Life as Mystery," given that the material is covered elsewhere in classic texts by Bishop Ware (The Orthodox Church: New Edition) and Protopresbyter Schmemann (For the Life of the World: Sacraments and Orthodoxy). I just finished the gut-wrenching story of James N. Rowe, a resilient person who remains so in the face of near-starvation and repeated psychological, physical and mental torture. The book teaches what it takes to survive (mind, body and spirit) under the harshest, most inhumane conditions.His book also provides a roadmap for living a meaningful life. Chiefly: love of family; optimism and a sense of humor (he nicknamed all of his guards according to their unique physique or personality); how good nutrition and exercise are critical; fierce commitments to higher ideals (he never gave into his interrogators or caved to their empty propaganda); a proactive attitude (he always took the lead in life or death situations with his brothers in arms); and reliance on God for inner strength and the sense of a higher purpose. His love of animals and need for companionship led to befriending and protecting the birds, shrews, chipmunks, and dogs in his prison camp from the cruel guards who gained pleasure from crippling or repeatedly drowning and resuscitating the small animals. His book is a coup.If Colonel Rowe were alive today, I would tell him thank you for teaching us how to live like a warrior every day!

Extremely riveting story about the pain and suffering our POWs endured while in captivity in Viet Nam. The brutal torture and deprivation they lived on a daily basis. The strength each showed always holding out hope that tomorrow would bring their release from this pit of hell. The courage and determination to plan and execute an escape despite the odds. The camaraderie and brotherhood each POW felt for his fellow captives. Helping out where they could but always standing together.I've read many great books about this war. This was the first I had read from a POW's account. I am now reading "Defiant." Highly recommend both!

This is the word that comes to mind in regards to Five Years to Freedom by Nick Rowe. The man had unlimited will power.This is an amazing book about a man who could endure almost any hardship as long as his faith in God, his fellow soldiers, and his oath to the country could not be broken. And from what is to be read inside of this book, the Vietnamese made every effort to break this man. They just could not do it.Ultimately, that’s what makes this book so great. It shows the power of perseverance at all costs and an unwillingness to give up or give in. It takes a special man to endure five years of torment. And I would love to know what his captures said in private about him. He did it all and kept his honor intact. It makes you wonder what you are willing to endure for what you believe most.I particularly enjoyed the end of this book. I won’t give it away. But Rowe stands up brilliantly under fire and leaves his captures in awe. It was spectacular series of events described by the man who was there to endure it. He stands as a man of inspiration and strength.If you liked this book I would strongly recommend reading To D-Day and Back: Adventures with the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment and Life as a World War II Power: A Memoir by Rob Bearden and Look out Bellow: Confessions of a Parachuting Padre by Father Francis Simpson. This last one is interest as it covers three wars. But the author was a POW captured by the Germans in Normandy during World War Two. All three books are different but have common themes.

I rarely give books five star ratings. Many of my reads have gotten 4 stars because they were well written and about subjects that I am interested in.This book goes beyond being interesting. It is superbly written, much of it in first person. The author takes us back to 1962, he a young Army Officer, Special Forces. It is Vietnam. But this is not an action packed military thriller, nor an analysis of of how, why or should we have been there, though those issues are covered in some respects.The author was captured deep in South Vietnam's Delta region and kept as a POW for five years. He skillfully takes you along with him on what can only be described as a horrible journey into the innermost region of his being. You will feel the sting of the mosquitoes bite, the itch and burn of skin fungus, the despair of being among people who look upon you as disposable but have to tolerate your presence for their own special agenda.This is neither an easy nor short read, yet I read it almost straight thru in a couple of days. Even though you know he lived because you are reading his book, you keep expecting him to report his own demise, and he almost does.Compelling, astounding and probably written to help dispel demons of survival and struggle in impossible circumstances that would drive lesser beings to suicide or madness.Don't pass this one up!

This book graphically details the life in captivity of Mr. Rowe during the early 60s. As a former military member who has been to SERE school, I see many of the lessons learned as a result of Mr. Rowe's POW experience. Well written, I got so caught up in the story that I grieved and rejoiced with him. His eventual escape was miraculous. Definitely a MUST READ for ALL military members and a great read if one wants to understand the commitment of our men and women in uniform.

A moving, instructional, and inspirational story from a great soldier. Nick Rowe was my commander when I worked with the US Army Special Force's SERE Committee - the group who instructed soldiers how to survive when own their own, evading the enemy, or being held in a POW camp. His mental agility, strength of character, and leadership helped make us all better soldiers. The story he tells is worth reading by anyone who wants to know how to live strong with dignity in the most adverse of circumstances. De Oppresso Liber!

Interesting read. I normally ready 30 minutes a night. Couldn't put it down and found myself reading 1-1.5 hours a night. Would have liked to known how James N. Rowe adjusted to life after being a POW for 5 years.

LOVED this book, read it almost in one sitting. As a fellow Canadian who left Canada at about the same time he did, I could relate SO closely to Meyers' memories of that era. His humor made me laugh, his recollections got me teary-eyed, and it was also interesting to follow the upward arc of his colourful career. I recommend this highly, and not only for Canadians. Most Americans would both enjoy and benefit greatly from the references to Canadian history which, I am sure, would be their first introduction to how things happened just to the North of our common border. . . Well done, Mike!

Mike Myers tells about his life of living in Canada from 1963 to 1983 and some interesting facts about the country. In 1867, Canada got its independence peacefully from Britain through a piece of British legislation called the British North America Act. Canada remained a Dominion of Britain. Canada did not get its own flag until 1965 and its own Constitution till 1982. There is a branch of the government called Statistics Canada. The book tells about long lists of Canadian achievements of firsts. There is bilingual packaging with both English and French on the same label. Can Con legislation dictate that radio stations in Canada had to play a certain percentage of Canadian music. There is no plural for the word beer in Canada. There are some phrases that are uniquely Canadian. In Canada, when you’re sick, you’re not in the hospital, you’re just “in hospital.” A Newfie is someone from Newfoundland. Newfoundland joined Canada in 1949, the last province to do so. The Canadian accent has some of its own pronunciations of some words. There are a few regional variations in pronunciation, even within Canada. Toronto and Chicago have much incommon. Toronto is an Iroquois word meaning ‘meeting place.’ Chicago comes from the Algonquian, meaning “wild garlic” or ‘”wild onion.” The cities are approximately the same size. Both are along a Great Lake and have proud traditions.

I'm not even a Canadian, I'm Japanese living in the U.S. for 20 yrs+ and do not know that much about Canada to truly appreciate all the details, but still I really enjoyed reading this book. I feel like we have a lot more in common with Canadian ways of thinking and living than American ways and it kind of explained why I felt so much at ease with people from Canada in early years of my stay in the U.S. Very interesting, funny, entertaining and enjoyable read.

I got this book based on seeing Mike Myers interviewed about it, and the fact that I like Canada and Canadians. I thought it might be funny, and it is; but it is also very interesting and informative about what it means to be a Canadian. Happy 150th birthday, Canada!

I was looking forward to this book. I am an American who occasional travels through Canada and have long been fascinated with it. So I was disappointed to read this book, very little about Canada, apart from the suburbs of Toronto, more a vehicle to talk about Mike Meyers. A mess of a book, sloppily written, disorganized. Perhaps if I were a Mike Meyer fan (or Canadian), I would have enjoyed it more. But if you are an American who wants to learn more about Canadians, look elsewhere.

I was also born in Canada in 1963 and enjoyed this book immensely. It contains alot of resonating truisms. I would be interested in reading a post-11/9 epilogue.This book may even inspire me to watch Wayne's World.BTW - "As possible as Canadian, under the circumstances" is per the contest run by Peter Gzowski. [ I didn't listen to his radio shows (CBC) but enjoyed his books immensely. ]Well done, Mike Myers.
