*Starred Review* There are many stories about bullies, but few have looked at the subject in such an attractive, original way. Using round splashes of watercolors as their personas, Otoshi introduces a group of colors. Quiet Blue likes looking at the sky. The other colors have their own characteristics: Orange is outgoing; Green is bright; Purple is regal. Red, though, is a hothead and likes to tease: “Red is hot. Blue is not.” Blue feels bad, and though the other colors comfort him, they’re afraid of Red. In a dramatic and effective spread, Red, feeling mean, grows into a bigger, ever-angrier ball. Enter One. The sturdy numeral wins over the other colors with laughter, making Red even madder, but when he tries his bullying ways on One, One stands up to him. The other colors follow, turning Red into a small ball. He is rolling away when Blue gracefully offers him a chance to be counted. The use of colors and numbers gives the story a much-needed universality, and there is a visceral power in the “strength-in-numbers” gambit (although it should be noted that it can work for ill as well as good). Otoshi cleverly offers a way to talk to very young children about the subject of bullying, even as she helps put their imaginations to work on solutions. Preschool-Grade 1. --Ilene Cooper

I don't regularly review books - especially children's books... but this is an exceptional book with a great take-home. Done in beautiful watercolor paint splotches, the story centers on bullying and feelings. 1 comes along and stands up - "I, for one, will say NO." I've brought this to my son's first grade classroom, armed with questions, and we had an amazing conversation about the times that the kids may have been Red, or Blue, or any of the other colors. Our first copy was a gift, but I bought a second on Amazon to hold onto for the next time we learn of a friend who needs the extra self-confidence. This should be required reading for children and adults alike!

As an elementary school principal and a mom of a 3 and 5 year old I LOVE this book! It is the best bullying book I've read. My 5 year old loved it and it entertained my 3 year old (not quite ready for the concept yet). I now have the book at work and plan to use it with the whole school. It teaches empathy in such a clever way that children of all ages can learn from. It also teaches the role of the bystander in bullying and how everyone needs to stand up for what is right. Yeah to Kathryn Otoshi!!

The artwork is absolutely beautiful. The colors look stunning on the bright white background, and the painted style conveys movement really well.As for the story:My one- and two-year-old's enjoy naming the colors and hearing the story read. My two-year-old also loves the counting component. As they get older, there will be more and more that they can take from it. Color names, color moods, numbers, counting, self-acceptance, responding to bullies, forgiveness, courage, defending others, etc. This book has something for every age.I teared up the first time I read it. Simple, sweet, powerful.

I got this book to help my five year old son with empathy and caring for others. This book is PERFECT! The story is cute, the colors and numbers are a great way to keep a young child entertained, and the storyline is something school aged children can really relate to (bully that nobody stands up to). My only issue is that when the colors turn into numbers, they say that they want to "count" (meaning matter) but my son thought they wanted to "count" like 1...2...3... It took me about 5 minutes to explain that "count" has two meanings and I'm still not sure he got it. Either way, he enjoyed it so much that he asked me to re-read it two more times that night. I expect he'll pull this one off the shelf more often than not. I would definitely recommend this to parents of children aged 3 to about 7 if you're trying to teach caring for yourself and others.

A wonderful book that grows with a child. For a while my child enjoyed talking about the colors. Then he enjoyed counting the numbers and now at 2.5 years he enjoys listening to the story. It is a story that will become more meaningful to him as he grows. This story tells an important message of speaking up for what is right in a clever and inventive way.

I bought this for my 5 going on 6 year old because she was bullied at school, but then began to lash out. When I tried to empower her, she showed overly aggressive behaviors. This is a good book to teach a child how not to be a victim--yet not be a bully. It's difficult to teach Kindergardeners a middle ground as they tend to be extremists. The best compliment I got after reading her this book was when she said "You're my number One".

This is the best anti bullying book I've seen for young kids. It's adorably written about standing up for yourself and taking a stand against bullies for others. It also demonstrates that bullies can feel left out sometimes and want to be included too. I had checked this book out from the local library. After reading it a couple of times to my kids I decided that we needed our own copy. Amazon delivers as always. I also like the author's books "Zero" and "Two". Also great messages.

This is one of my new favorites. I read it to my second graders today and it went over extremely well! They absolutely loved it! It allows for SO much thoughtful discussion. We were able to use notice and note close reading strategies to better understand this text. The students were so thrilled with this story and were excitedly telling me how awesome it was, and that it was their new favorite as well. Definitely a keeper! Now to get Zero!
